Wednesday evening UK news briefing: Cabinet ministers poised to tell Boris Johnson he must resign
This looks like the endgame. A group of Cabinet ministers - including the new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi - are planning to confront Boris Johnson this evening and tell him that he must step down as Prime Minister. The Telegraph understands that Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, and Simon Hart, the Welsh Secretary, are among those who are preparing to make the intervention . Mr Zahawi is also understood to be involved, with the push against the Prime Minister being coordinated by Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris. It comes as Mr Johnson continues to suffer a brutal wave of resignations. As this email was sent, 35 Tory MPs had left Government roles in the last 24 hours. Yet Mr Johnson told MPs at Prime Minister's Questions and the liaison committee that he intends to "keep going". Our live blog is your first point of call for breaking news. Germany to ease immigration laws
The German government is hoping to give over 130,000 migrants trapped in a legal limbo the chance to stay permanently, as part of an overhaul of Germany's immigration system. Chancellor Olaf Scholz 's government on Wednesday agreed on a package of reforms that will open the prospect of residency rights to people who have lived in Germany for more than five years with a so-called "Duldung," or tolerance status. "We are a diverse immigration country. Now we want to become a better integration country," Wrote Interior Minister Nancy Faeser from Scholz's center-left Social Democrat SPD on Twitter. "I want to actively shape migration and integration instead of reluctantly administering them as I have done for the past 16 years," she continued in reference to the previous conservative government's policies. A Duldung is normally issued to people who have been refused asylum but who can't return to their home country for various reasons: These might include the threat of war … [Read more...] about Germany to ease immigration laws

What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
“D uck and cover!” a mechanized voice screamed. The ground shook and the window rattled. I rolled from my bed to the floor of my trailer and felt for the armor I’d forgotten in my office. I lay there and sweated and swore. The voice from the loudspeaker urged me to get away from the windows. I was inside a tin can. I crawled to the door. My hand was on the knob when I realized I was naked. The next impact knocked the air conditioner to the floor. I grabbed a light-blue cotton robe and bolted. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. I raced along a row of sandbags, one hand holding the robe closed. The duck-and-cover bunkers were 100 feet away. Another series of explosions, and I hit the rocks. I was lying there, panting, when I saw a bright-yellow bunker tucked behind a row of sandbags and palm trees. I was up, running, full out. My robe fell open and flew out behind me. Another hit. I was 20 feet away. Ten. Five. I crashed into the … [Read more...] about What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid RESIGN in Cabinet coup to topple Boris Johnson
Sajid Javid and Rishi Sunak have both resigned from Government in an extraordinary blow to Boris Johnson 's premiership. The Health Secretary made the bombshell move as Tory anger mounted over the Prime Minister's handling of the Chris Pincher saga. Minutes later, Chancellor Rishi Sunak also announced he was also quitting . A source claimed the top Tories did not co-ordinate their resignations - despite the appearance of an organised coup to oust Mr Johnson. Their departures could be a fatal blow to the scandal-hit Prime Minister, who is fighting for his political life once again after months of sleaze and scandal. Mr Johnson was forced into a crisis reshuffle, which led to him appointing his Chief of Staff Steve Barclay as Health Secretary. Only 10 days ago Mr Johnson boasted he was “thinking actively” about a third term in office - that would keep him in No10 until the “mid-2030s”. But tonight his authority was rocked by a wave of departures, as several … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid RESIGN in Cabinet coup to topple Boris Johnson
Bristol slavery victims recount ‘horrendous’ abuse
Published 22 June Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A pregnant woman has recounted the "horrendous" conditions she endured as a modern slavery victim. Maros Tancos tricked the victim and numerous other vulnerable Slovaks into coming to the UK with the promise of a better life. But instead Tancos and co-conspirator Joanna Gomulska, of Bristol, used them as slaves. The pair were jailed on Wednesday after being found guilty of modern slavery and human trafficking offences. The woman, who gave birth while working for the couple, said: "I knew I could not leave, there was nothing I could do." She spoke as Tancos was jailed for 16 years and Gomulska nine years at Bristol Crown Court. The trial heard how they kept vulnerable Slovakians as slaves - forcing them to work at their car wash during the day and other jobs at night - and spent their earnings on gambling, … [Read more...] about Bristol slavery victims recount ‘horrendous’ abuse
All the Tories brutally turning against Boris Johnson’s leadership as MPs ‘read last rites’
Shameless Boris Johnson has told friends he will "smash on" despite a string of resignations. The Prime Minister is said to have declared "I'm not going anywhere” despite Rishi Sunak , Sajid Javid and his Solicitor General all resigning last night. But MPs have other ideas - with a string of Tories from across the spectrum reading him the “last rites”. While the Cabinet are now mostly firm, the PM is being rocked by a string of junior resignations from government. Between 6pm on Tuesday and 2pm on Wednesday 21 MPs resigned from the government - nine ministers, nine parliamentary private secretaries, two trade envoys and one Tory vice chair. Back bench MPs across the spectrum, from moderate ex-ministers Chris Skidmore and Nick Gibb to culture war Red Wallers Jonathan Gullis, Tom Hunt and Lee Anderson, have charged over the top. For so many MPs, the revelation the PM knew about claims against MP Chris Pincher, then promoted him repeatedly, then “forgot” he’d been told, is … [Read more...] about All the Tories brutally turning against Boris Johnson’s leadership as MPs ‘read last rites’
Lee Anderson: Red wall Tory MP withdraws support for Boris Johnson
Published 28 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing An MP in the so-called red wall seat of Ashfield has withdrawn his support for Boris Johnson over the government's handling of the situation with former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher. Lee Anderson said he had stayed loyal since being elected in 2019. But the Conservative MP said giving Mr Pincher the job, having been told about earlier inappropriate behaviour, was "not a good appointment". "I cannot look myself in the mirror and accept this," he added. Mr Anderson highlighted the initial denial that the prime minister had been told about earlier allegations and then the change in the government's position to state that Mr Johnson simply forgot. He added: "It is my belief that our PM has got all the big decisions right and guided us through the most difficult time in my lifetime and I have always backed him … [Read more...] about Lee Anderson: Red wall Tory MP withdraws support for Boris Johnson
