Mercury is set to pass in front of the Sun in a rare event that has had huge importance to the history of astronomy. But you shouldn’t watch it. While the sight of Mercury’s transit is one of the most spectacular and important things that can be viewed from Earth, doing so with the naked eye can be dangerous. But there is still a range of ways that you can watch the important alignment. Watching at home is dangerous because it relies on looking straight at the Sun. You wouldn’t actually be able to see the event with the naked eye anyway – or using kit like eclipse glasses – because the dark patch of Mercury is swamped by the bright light of the Sun. Nasa's most stunning pictures of space Show all 30 Seeing the event would instead require a telescope. But that’s an even worse idea: it serves only to amplify the effect of the sun’s light on your eyes, and could cause lasting and painful damage or even blindness. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2020: How to watch, live stream
In keeping with the motto that "the show must go on," the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will continue for the 94th year, but this time around it'll happen without throngs of people lining the route. On Thursday, floats, the Rockettes and numerous other performers will make their way down a shortened parade route in a televised-only event. In keeping with tradition, some of NBC's biggest faces, including Today anchors Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and weatherman Al Roker, will take charge of the broadcast. The parade will be streamed on NBC so viewers will have the opportunity to watch the celebration on their televisions, as well as on YouTube through Verizon's channel. The live stream will be hosted by Mario Lopez and kick off at 9 a.m. eastern, the same time NBC's coverage begins. Transit of Mercury today: How to watch incredibly rare celestial sight as planet crosses in front of the Sun
A rare Transit of Mercury is about to take place, marking the last chance to see it for more than a decade. The phenomenon happens when the planet travels right between the Earth and the Sun , allowing it to be seen as a tiny dot on our star. It is the last chance to see the rare celestial sight until 2032, because the planets so rarely line up in such a formation. The Transit of Mercury will begin at 12.35 GMT, and last for almost six hours. All of it will be visible from the Americas, most of the Caribbean and some of west Africa. Some places such as Europe, the Middle East and most of Africa will miss out on the end because the sun will set before it is over, and people in much of Asia and Australia will miss out entirely. There are only 13 or 14 of the transits each century. Though Mercury goes around the Sun every 88 days, and moves between the Earth and the Sun every 116 days, it usually above or below the star and so we cannot see it. Russia-Ukraine war takes center stage at Davos World Economic Forum
Lush green meadows have replaced the familiar white blanket of snow as the Davos cohort makes a comeback to the scenic Swiss Alpine town after a hiatus of more than two years. The annual gathering of the rich and powerful that was forced into the virtual world by the COVID-19 pandemic returns in its physical form at a time when a devasting war in Ukraine and coronavirus outbreaks in China are stoking recession fears amid soaring prices, fueling steep increases in global hunger and poverty. "The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos this year will be the most timely and consequential annual meeting since the creation of the forum over 50 years ago,'' WEF founder Klaus Schwab told reporters ahead of the meeting. "The return of war, epidemics and the climate crisis, all those disruptive forces have derailed the global recovery," Schwab said. "Those issues must be confronted in Davos; the global food crisis, in particular, needs our immediate attention."
