Vladimir Putin’s plot to dismantle the West has backfired spectacularly

May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Since retiring from the Russian army in 2000, Colonel Mikhail Khodarenok has been an éminence grise of military affairs, regularly popping up on state television to give his analysis. He has been at it too long to be too afraid of the Kremlin. In February, he ridiculed as “fantasy” the idea that Ukraine could be easily conquered. On a primetime Rossiya-1 TV show earlier this week, he went further . “We are now in total geopolitical isolation,” he said. “We don’t want to admit it. But practically, the whole world is against us.” The host, Olga Skabeyeva, confronted him immediately. What about India and China, she asked: aren’t they worthy allies? “I’m looking at the bigger picture,” he replied. So is Joe Biden . This morning, he lands in Seoul as part of a five-day trip to salute the Asian flank of the new anti-Putin alliance. His visit makes a point that has not been lost on Colonel Khodarenok: this war is not (as Moscow TV so often says) Russia vs Nato, or Russia vs “the … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s plot to dismantle the West has backfired spectacularly

Huntington Beach COVID “curfew breakers” rally to protest stay-at-home orders

November 22, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

A large crowd of people gathered in Huntington Beach to protest California's statewide curfew after it went into effect on Saturday night. The latest restrictions to combat a surge in coronavirus cases require the vast majority of Californians to stay at home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless they are going out for essential work, responding to an emergency, shopping for groceries, picking up takeout or walking their dog. The curfew applies to 41 of California's 58 counties which remain in the purple tier—the most restrictive of the four tiers that permit various stages of economic reopening. Orange County, where Huntington Beach is located, is in the purple tier. But a crowd of people broke the curfew immediately after it was enacted to join a rally protesting the limited stay-at-home order. The "curfew breakers" protest was being planned to start at 10.01 p.m. at the Huntington Beach Pier on Saturday, according to a flier posted on Twitter by FoxLA reporter Bill Melugin. Russia-Ukraine war takes center stage at Davos World Economic Forum

January 20, 2022 by www.dw.com

Lush green meadows have replaced the familiar white blanket of snow as the Davos cohort makes a comeback to the scenic Swiss Alpine town after a hiatus of more than two years. The annual gathering of the rich and powerful that was forced into the virtual world by the COVID-19 pandemic returns in its physical form at a time when a devasting war in Ukraine and coronavirus outbreaks in China are stoking recession fears amid soaring prices, fueling steep increases in global hunger and poverty. "The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos this year will be the most timely and consequential annual meeting since the creation of the forum over 50 years ago,'' WEF founder Klaus Schwab told reporters ahead of the meeting. "The return of war, epidemics and the climate crisis, all those disruptive forces have derailed the global recovery," Schwab said. "Those issues must be confronted in Davos; the global food crisis, in particular, needs our immediate attention." More than … [Read more...] about Russia-Ukraine war takes center stage at Davos World Economic Forum

Paul Scholes and his “stupid” Man Utd decision that nearly saw Sir Alex Ferguson sack him

April 1, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Paul Scholes will go down in history as a Manchester United legend, with countless trophies to his name and a memorable return from retirement , but things could have gone very differently if Sir Alex Ferguson had reacted differently when the midfielder committed what he says was "probably a sackable offence". Back in the 2001-02 season, United found themselves in the unusual position of playing two games in as many days, with a league meeting with Liverpool followed by a League Cup clash with Arsenal. Scholes was benched for the first game, making a late cameo, in place of David Beckham, but Ferguson has planned to use the midfielder in a rotated XI for the trip to Highbury. Scholes, however, took the unusual decision of telling the manager - who had at one point looked set to retire at the end of the season - he wouldn't play in north London. Looking back on the incident, the former England international has admitted he was lucky to get away with a fine for his … [Read more...] about Paul Scholes and his “stupid” Man Utd decision that nearly saw Sir Alex Ferguson sack him

Stanley Johnson becomes French to keep link with EU

May 20, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 23 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Brexit Boris Johnson's father Stanley says he has become a French national, telling a Belgium news website he wanted to keep "a link" with the EU after Brexit. Mr Johnson, whose mother was French, told BFMTV getting citizenship was "something precious" and allowed him to "claim part of my identity". "I count myself once again as an EU member - that's very good," he added. Unlike his son, who led the campaign to leave the EU, Mr Johnson voted Remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum. However, he later changed his mind, saying "the time has come to bail". Between 1979 and 1984, Mr Johnson was a member of the European Parliament representing Wight and Hampshire East. Downing Street said his decision to accept French citizenship was "a personal matter for the prime minister's father". … [Read more...] about Stanley Johnson becomes French to keep link with EU
