BBC takes stock of Countryfile amid complaints about impartiality

July 1, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The BBC is to scrutinise the impartiality of Countryfile as part of a review into editorial standards. The BBC One show has been at the centre of impartiality rows over farming, fox hunting and environmental issues. In its review, to be conducted in-house, the corporation will assess the programme’s impartiality , freedom of expression, diversity of voices, accuracy, fairness and trust. BBC Breakfast News and morning radio news programmes will also be subject to review at the same time. The BBC said other programmes would follow and insisted that Countryfile had not been selected “because of particular impartiality concerns”. However, sources acknowledged that it was a show which regularly prompted complaints. “Countryfile has to deal with some contentious issues that bring out differing views. This is the first of many programmes we’ll be looking at as part of our review process, but the kinds of issues Countryfile covers make it a good barometer for impartiality,” an … [Read more...] about BBC takes stock of Countryfile amid complaints about impartiality

BT loses exclusive rights to Champions League

July 1, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

BT Sport has lost its stranglehold on Champions League football in Britain after almost a decade, ceding a handful of matches to Amazon as regulators scrutinise its merger with Eurosport . Amazon has won the rights to show one game a week on its Prime Video service from 2024, UEFA is expected to announce on Friday morning. BT Sport, which is due to merge with Eurosport later this year, will retain the vast majority of games across the Champions League, Europa League and the third-tier Conference League. It has enjoyed exclusive rights to UEFA club competitions since outbidding Sky in 2013 and retaining the majority of the rights will be seen as a welcome boost ahead of the merger with Eurosport. Amazon’s intervention may also ease regulatory pressure on the deal, which the Competition and Markets Authority is investigating. The US giant’s one game per week across Europe’s premier competition would mean it showing close to 20 games to Prime members, making it a regular … [Read more...] about BT loses exclusive rights to Champions League

More info The reality of today’s announcement at an event run by the pro-Centre for European Studies is that Starmer and his team know that Brexit is still hurting them in the country. This was witnessed in the recent Wakefield by-election which Labour won but only because the massive pro-Leave/Conservative vote stayed at home . A near historic low turnout of 20 percent was hardly a ringing endorsement for the party to take back its former heartlands in the Red Wall seats. ANDREW PIERCE: Matt Hancock CCTV dilemma runs up a £10k bill

July 4, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

The CCTV system that did for Health Secretary Matt Hancock is still whirring away at his old department, despite mandarins running up a £10,000 bill for legal advice on the rights and wrongs of having it removed. Hancock, 43, was forced to quit a year ago last week after his passionate clinch with a colleague, Gina Coladangelo, also 43, was caught on a camera mounted in his ministerial office. When the footage was leaked to a newspaper, it triggered the end of both parties' marriages. In the aftermath, international law firm Pinsent Masons was hired to examine the implications of 'Hikvision CCTV equipment removal' across the DoH estate. Hancock, who is keen to restart his ministerial career, has declared in the Commons Register of Members' Interests £11,000 of hospitality in New York and Miami from Hawksmoor Technology Advisors. They hosted his visit to a crypto-currency conference called the Permissionless Experience. Some might say it's not the first time that he's had a … [Read more...] about ANDREW PIERCE: Matt Hancock CCTV dilemma runs up a £10k bill

Keir Starmer compares Tory Brexit to ‘wet wipe island’ and vows to sort Johnson’s ‘poor deal’

July 4, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Keir Starmer will accuse the Tories of creating a "hulking fatberg" of Brexit red tape in a speech laying out Labour's plans for the future relationship with Brussels. The Labour leader is expected to unveil his new plan to "Make Brexit Work", in a nod to Boris Johnson's election-winning promise to "Get Brexit Done" in 2019. In a speech today, Mr Starmer will say Labour won't undo Brexit and make it clear he won't try to rejoin the EU's single market and customs union. But he will denounce the "mess" created by Mr Johnson and say the Tories have "created a hulking ‘fatberg’ of red tape", in a comparison to the 'wet wipe island' found in the river Thames. “It is hampering the flow of British business. We will break that barrier down," he was due to say, according remarks first trailed to the FT. Mr Starmer, who was Shadow Brexit Secretary under Jeremy Corbyn , has been quiet on his former brief amid deep divisions in the party's ranks over the issue. Keir Starmer was … [Read more...] about Keir Starmer compares Tory Brexit to ‘wet wipe island’ and vows to sort Johnson’s ‘poor deal’
