Title 42: Controversial Trump-era immigration policy remains in place
On May 20, a federal judge in Louisiana ruled that Title 42, a policy used since the Trump-era to expel millions of asylum seekers at the southern border, must remain in place. In April, the Biden administration had announced a plan to rescind the controversial public health order, which restricts migrants' entry into the US on the grounds that they pose a health risk. But over 20 states filed a lawsuit against the decision. Title 42 was invoked by former president Donald Trump in March 2020, at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The provision, laid out in the United States Code, is designed to protect public health and was officially implemented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to curb the spread of COVID-19. But effectively it means that Border Patrol can immediately turn back and expel migrants attempting to cross into the US without legal authorization, denying them the opportunity to request asylum and have their claim heard. In the last two … [Read more...] about Title 42: Controversial Trump-era immigration policy remains in place
Government risks angering Trump as it pushes ahead with digital services tax
The Government has risked provoking Donald Trump into retaliating against the UK by targeting Silicon Valley tech titans with a new tax, just hours after France was blasted for its own new digital levy. Philip Hammond today outlined plans for the UK's new digital services tax, which will come into force next year, and will directly hit the likes of Facebook, Google and Amazon. The release came amid an escalating war of words between French ministers and the Trump administration, which saw the US order an investigation into tax proposals and pave the way for retaliatory tariffs against the EU nation for approving its own digital tax. Trade body TechUK warned the latest move by Mr Hammond could put the UK in the firing line. Giles Derrington, head of policy at the group, said it was leaving the UK “at risk of retaliation from the US government that would hurt British businesses and consumers”. There were, however, some signs that not all US tech giants would be hit. For … [Read more...] about Government risks angering Trump as it pushes ahead with digital services tax
Former U.S. Ambassador: ‘Ukrainians are fighting for our freedom as well’
As the deadliest European war in decades enters its third month, Newsweek spoke with former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch about the deeper implications of the conflict — for Ukraine itself, but also for the wider world. Yovanovitch, whose recently released memoir, Lessons From the Edge, details both her 33-year diplomatic career and her firing by former President Donald Trump in 2019 following an extensive smear campaign against her, sees Ukraine as a key battleground in the global contest between democracy and autocracy. In her interview, Yovanovitch stressed the importance of understanding the effect that regime type has on a given country's policies, both foreign and domestic. From her perspective, the current hot war in Ukraine is not a battle over materialistic geopolitical interests or expanding alliance structures, but an attempt by an authoritarian Russian leadership to remake the world in its own image. It is a fight that, if Russia is permitted to win, … [Read more...] about Former U.S. Ambassador: ‘Ukrainians are fighting for our freedom as well’
Herschel Walker’s chances of beating Raphael Warnock, according to polls
Herschel Walker, Georgia's GOP Senate candidate, will officially go head-to-head with Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock after both candidates won their primaries on Tuesday—and the former football star appears well positioned to pose a strong challenge to the incumbent. Warnock, a pastor, hopes to maintain his seat, which he won in January 2021 in a runoff special election, flipping it blue after President Joe Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win in Georgia since 1992. Walker has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump , who continues to hold a grudge against GOP leaders in the state after they refused to help him unconstitutionally overturn Biden's victory there. While Democrats won big in the presidential and runoff elections, also flipping Georgia's other Senate seat blue, it's unclear whether that momentum will hold during the midterm race this November. Recent polls suggest that Walker is slightly favored to beat Warnock, … [Read more...] about Herschel Walker’s chances of beating Raphael Warnock, according to polls
Iran offers more support for Iraq as it officially opens border with Syria
Iran has pledged to further support Iraq's reconstruction as the neighboring nation announced the official reopening of the border with Syria, which has also been ravaged by conflict and is a mutual ally of Tehran and Baghdad. At a ceremony remembering those who were killed in Iraq's war against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), Iranian ambassador Iraj Masjidi reiterated that his country "has always supported and will support Iraq's national sovereignty and territorial integrity." The U.S. and its regional allies have accused the Islamic Republic of exerting undue influence over fellow majority-Shiite Muslim Iraq, something Tehran has denied as it faced off with Washington's "maximum pressure" campaign of economic restrictions and political isolation. "Iran rushed to the aid of its Iraqi brothers in the most difficult conditions of Iraq's war against ISIS, and today insists that it will be with the Iraqi government and nation at the time of rebuilding and reconstruction," … [Read more...] about Iran offers more support for Iraq as it officially opens border with Syria
Mysterious “accident” at Iran weapons facility with suspected links to nuclear program kills engineer
Tehran, Iran — An unexplained incident struck a major Iranian military and weapons development base east of Tehran, the country's state TV reported on Thursday, killing an engineer and injuring another employee. Iran 's Defense Ministry said the "accident" occurred on Wednesday afternoon at a research center at the Parchin military complex. The ministry did not elaborate on the cause of the accident or provide any further details, but said an investigation was underway. It identified the engineer who died as Ehsun Ghadbeigi. Western concerns over the Iranian atomic program led to sanctions and eventually to Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The U.S. under President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the accord in May 2018, leading to a series of escalating attacks between Iran and the U.S. and Tehran abandoning the deal's production limits. Ongoing negotiations led to hopes in March that a roadmap could be agreed that would see the United States rejoin the … [Read more...] about Mysterious “accident” at Iran weapons facility with suspected links to nuclear program kills engineer

No peace in the Middle East until U.S. troops leave, Iran’s president tells UN General Assembly
Regional stability in the Middle East cannot be achieved while U.S. troops are still deployed there, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned on Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Rouhani presented a new peace proposal designed to soothe tensions in the region, calling on neighboring nations to join Iran and douse "the flames of war, bloodshed, aggression, occupation and religious and sectarian fanaticism and extremism." Rouhani said his HOPE—standing for the Hormuz Peace Endeavor—security coalition would secure the region around the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, thus ensuring the unhindered flow of oil and shipping through the waterway and a mutually beneficial outcome for nations nearby. But HOPE could not include the U.S., Rouhani said, suggesting that outside intervention will only exacerbate friction in the Persian Gulf and wider Middle East. "The security of our region shall be provided when American troops pull out," Rouhani said, … [Read more...] about No peace in the Middle East until U.S. troops leave, Iran’s president tells UN General Assembly
