Jared and Ivanka are turning on Trump — and now you see the true face of the Republican Party
One big bonus of nepotism is ensuring that you’re surrounded with unthinking, uncritical loyalists. So Donald Trump must be especially miffed that his own family has been nervously but definitively sliding the knife between his shoulder blades during the ongoing January 6 Congressional hearings. Trump’s daughter, former Senior White House Advisor Ivanka Trump, said in taped testimony during the hearings on Thursday that she did not believe her father’s baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen. “I respect Attorney General Barr,” she said . “So I accepted what he was saying [when he said that the claims of election fraud were false.]” Donald Trump immediately hit back against his own daughter. He insisted that Ivanka had not been involved in studying election results, and dismissed her on the right-wing social media site Truth Social: “She had long since checked out and was, in my opinion, only trying to be respectful to Bill Barr.” Then, today, Ivanka’s husband … [Read more...] about Jared and Ivanka are turning on Trump — and now you see the true face of the Republican Party
What ‘Unprecedented’ trailer reveals about Donald Trump’s family
The trailer for Alex Holder's three-part docuseries Unprecedented, which details Donald Trump and his family during the 2020 presidential campaign and after the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, has emerged. The documentary trailer, which is due to be broadcast on Discovery+ sometime in the summer , was obtained by Politico. While not detailing too much, the Unprecedented trailer does show how much access Holder had around the Trump family during the final stages of the 2020 campaign and prior to the Capitol riot. The footage shows members of the Trump family—the former president, Ivanka Trump , Eric Trump , Donald Trump Jr., and Jared Kushner —in outtakes as they are setting up for interviews. The trailer also shows clips from Trump rallies across the country during the final few weeks of the campaign, including one where Trump Jr. states "we will make liberals cry again." The president's eldest son made a similar remark on the eve of Election Day in … [Read more...] about What ‘Unprecedented’ trailer reveals about Donald Trump’s family
Donald Trump says Ivanka had ‘checked out’ when she accepted election wasn’t stolen
Donald Trump said his daughter Ivanka had "long since checked out" after she rejected claims that the election was stolen. In evidence to the Congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol, Ms Trump said she agreed with Bill Barr, her father's former attorney general, who called suggestions of widespread voter fraud "bull----." In a statement on social media, Mr Trump dismissed his daughter's evidence. He said: “Ivanka Trump was not involved in looking at, or studying, Election results. "She had long since checked out and was, in my opinion, only trying to be respectful to Bill Barr and his position as Attorney General (he sucked!)." Video footage of Mr Barr's evidence to the committee was played during a prime-time hearing broadcast live for two hours on many US TV channels. Fox News did not show the proceedings live. Mr Barr said: "I made clear [to Mr Trump after the election] that I did not agree with the idea of saying the … [Read more...] about Donald Trump says Ivanka had ‘checked out’ when she accepted election wasn’t stolen
Jan 6 hearings: Four big things we’ve learned
Anthony Zurcher @awzurcher on Twitter Published 12 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics US Capitol riots Two weeks ago, there was considerable speculation about how the congressional committee investigating the 6 January attack on the US Capitol would be received by the American public. Would there be an audience? Could the Democrat-led committee shed any new light on the attack and the actions by then-President Donald Trump and his associates? It turns out the American public did tune in, with a viewership that topped 20 million for the first prime time hearing. In addition, the five public hearings have proven able to generate a steady stream of new revelations and headlines over the course of the past two weeks. What's more, the proceedings have generated sufficient new leads and evidence that a number of additional hearings … [Read more...] about Jan 6 hearings: Four big things we’ve learned
If the January 6 Hearings Don’t Change Minds, Nothing Will
At the Global Fact international fact-checkers’ conference I attended in Oslo earlier this month, there were workshops on digital investigation, lectures on media literacy, even sessions devoted to hateful social media of the kind that sometimes gets directed at people who check facts for a living—and there are many such people. Fact-checking is now a sophisticated, high-tech profession, with members in places all over the world—Colombia, Canada, South Africa, Taiwan. What they can do with tiny scraps of evidence is almost unsettling. Fact-checking websites and fact-checking columnists can tell you how to identify a video that has been manipulated, how to spot a fake social-media account, how to geolocate an atrocity just by examining a single photograph that has appeared online. But despite all of this knowledge, fact-checkers can’t always get people to believe them. This isn’t their fault. As the writer Jonathan Rauch wrote last year in his prescient book, The Constitution of … [Read more...] about If the January 6 Hearings Don’t Change Minds, Nothing Will
