Spain boosts military spending to close gap with NATO goal
Spain is increasing military spending as it works toward meeting a NATO commitment by dedicating 2% of gross domestic product to defense, the Spanish government said Tuesday. Cabinet members approved a one-off expenditure of almost 1 billion euros ($1 billion) for Spain's Defense Ministry that the government said was needed to cover unexpected expenses produced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine . Spain has sent military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and deployed more troops and aircraft to NATO missions in Eastern Europe. NATO leaders agreed at a summit held in Madrid last week to expand their efforts to get all alliance members up to the 2% of GDP mark. Currently, only nine of the Western military alliance's 30 members meet or surpass that goal. Spain pledged at a NATO summit held in Madrid last week that it would reach the 2% of GDP goal by 2029. That would mean doubling its budget for military spending from the current 13 billion euros ($13.4 billion) to … [Read more...] about Spain boosts military spending to close gap with NATO goal
Uneasy truce as Prince Harry and Meghan keep schtum over bullying report
Buckingham Palace and the Sussexes appear to have called a public truce over a controversial bullying report, after its contents were kept secret from the public . The Palace has blocked details of a report into the handling of bullying allegations made against the Duchess of Sussex in 2018, with its limited findings kept hidden from even those who contributed. In response, the Duke and Duchess will make no public comment on the unresolved allegations, despite previously authorising the strongest of statements defending Meghan. The unusual silence on either side has led to speculation that the Palace and Sussexes, who work closely with their lawyers, are both moving to downplay the long-running dispute . Both sides are understood to be hopeful of drawing a line under the episode. Those involved in the review, said to be around half a dozen one-time members of staff, have so far remained tight-lipped about the details of the Duchess’ alleged behaviour in 2018. 'We will … [Read more...] about Uneasy truce as Prince Harry and Meghan keep schtum over bullying report
Prince Harry: I see my mother’s legacy when I look at my own children
The Duke of Sussex has described how he sees his late mother’s legacy when he looks at his own two children every day. He revealed that not a day goes by when he does not think about the mark Diana, Princess of Wales , left on both him and his brother, the Duke of Cambridge. “My mother instilled in me a drive to speak up and fight for a better world,” he said. “And now, as a husband and parent, my mother’s voice is even stronger in my life.” The Duke, 37, recorded a video message to open this year’s Diana Award ceremony, which took place virtually on what would have been the Princess’s 61st birthday, marking the 25th anniversary of her death. He said it was a “special year” and one in which he hoped people would take extra time to “not just remember how she lived but to reflect on the life she continues to lead through so many”. The award is the only charity bearing the Princess’s name and honours young people aged nine to 25 who work to improve the lives of others. ‘My … [Read more...] about Prince Harry: I see my mother’s legacy when I look at my own children
Queen’s job description is rewritten to reduce ‘must-do’ duties
The Queen’s role has been rewritten by Buckingham Palace, as it removes duties she “must fulfil” as monarch and entrusts more to the Prince of Wales. The Queen’s “official duties” have been edited in the palace’s annual report for the first time in at least a decade, to take out specific events such as the State Opening of Parliament that were previously considered necessary by “constitutional convention”. The new version, published following the Platinum Jubilee, places greater emphasis on the support of the wider Royal family. According to the Sovereign Grant report, signed off by Sir Michael Stevens, Keeper of the Privy Purse, the Queen’s role still comprises two key elements: Head of State and Head of Nation. As Head of State, the “formal constitutional concept”, the Queen “must fulfil” specific duties. These were previously laid out as a 13-point list, including the State Opening of Parliament, the appointment of the Prime Minister, and paying and receiving state … [Read more...] about Queen’s job description is rewritten to reduce ‘must-do’ duties
UK’s first mass-produced hydrogen truck unveiled
The first hydrogen and electric-powered lorry to be mass-produced in the UK has been unveiled. Start-up firm Tevva, based in Thurrock , Essex , has added a hydrogen fuel cell system to its battery-electric HGV design. The hydrogen tops up the battery, enabling the vehicle to carry heavier loads over longer distances. The 7.5-tonne hydrogen electric truck can be driven for up to 310 miles, according to Tevva. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator The firm’s chief executive and founder Asher Bennett told the PA news agency: “When a zero emission truck is doing more miles per day, that is very good for the air we breathe, for the planet and for the economics of running electric trucks. “Every mile you drive on an electric truck, it’s so much cheaper than driving on a diesel truck. “If you’re concerned about range, and you’re not driving a lot of miles, you’re just not saving enough money as you could.” … [Read more...] about UK’s first mass-produced hydrogen truck unveiled
Cost-of-living crisis being treated as seriously as pandemic, No 10 says
Boris Johnson has ordered ministers to hold regular press conferences on efforts to counter the rising cost of living. Regular ministerial press conferences were a feature of the pandemic and the decision to restart them is a sign that No 10 is concerned about the public mood in the face of the squeeze on living standards. Downing Street said the decision to hold televised briefings in the same way as during the Covid-19 crisis showed rising prices were being “treated with the same level of seriousness in terms of trying to address the problem”. Mr Johnson used Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting to tell ministers “tackling inflation and addressing cost-of-living pressures will remain the top priority, which is why we will be holding regular Government press conferences over the next six months to explain the details of different elements of the Government’s plan for the economy”, Downing Street said. Asked whether it was a sign that the crisis was as serious as the … [Read more...] about Cost-of-living crisis being treated as seriously as pandemic, No 10 says
