The People's Housemate has finally been elected on Big Brother. The special housemate was decided by the public in Monday night's live launch, from four candidates from all around Britain. He became the most powerful housemate – holding great power within the house, even breaking one of the most fundamental of Big Brother rules. The 16th housemate will have access to the outside world. The public will be able to influence their decisions and talk directly to them while they're in the house. Housemates are usually banned from contacting people outside the house for the full duration of their Big Brother stint, or will be passed news concerning family members in an emergency. Occasionally, producers will taunt housemates with letters from their friends and family in return for them completing difficult tasks. A paramedic couple returning to the UK with their five-week-old daughter after four years living in Abu Dhabi have said travellers should not be used as 'guinea pigs'. From Monday, UK nationals or residents returning to England from 33 countries will be required to spend 10 days in Government-designated quarantine hotel at a cost of £1,750 for an individual. The regulations have been published just days before the scheme becomes law. But border guards and Heathrow airport have spoken today of how they feel under-prepared for the new rules, with officials saying earlier today that they feel powerless to stop travellers who may 'leg it' from airports to avoid quarantining. A seriously-ill teenager received a staggering 1,200 birthday cards from strangers after he was forced to spend his 16th birthday in hospital. Luke Hesketh has a genetic disease which causes muscle weakness and wasting and was recently told his heart is failing and there is little doctors can do. With his 16th birthday approaching, Luke's mum Tracey Hesketh, 48, asked friends on Facebook if they could make him feel extra special and send a card. But she was staggered when her message was shared around the country - and their postie delivered a staggering 1,200 birthday cards from well-wishers. She surprised Luke with all the cards and gifts, and now nearly every inch of his room in Manchester Children's Hospital is covered with messages from strangers and pals.
