Jacinda Ardern said she did not know that former Manus Island detainee Behrouz Boochani was coming to New Zealand before his arrival, saying she was disappointed she was not given a “heads up” by her immigration minister. Speaking in Wellington on Monday, Ardern said she would have “preferred” it if the minister, Iain Lees-Galloway, had told her in advance about Boochani’s arrival. “Having said that, of course it is still a matter that ultimately the result would not have changed as a result of me knowing, but yes I would have preferred to have a heads up,” Ardern said. Boochani arrived in Christchurch last Friday to attend a literary festival after leaving Australia’s Manus Island detention centre in Papua New Guinea last week. He is in New Zealand on a one-month visitor’s visa. When pressed on why she was kept in the dark about Boochani’s arrival, Ardern said it was an “operation decision” made by Immigration New … [Read more...] about Jacinda Ardern says she was kept in the dark over arrival of Manus refugee Behrouz Boochani

Scorching hot temperatures — such as those in which Germany and much of Europe have baked in recent days — can cause things to fray and crack, not least a person's nerves. It turns out that airport runways can crack under the strain too. On Tuesday evening, Hanover Airport, Germany's ninth-busiest, had to cease operations after the ongoing heatwave caused damage to one of its two runways. With the other runway already out of commission due to previously scheduled renovation work (unrelated to the heatwave) planes could not land or take off and the airport was closed until Wednesday morning, with repair work taking place overnight. Temperatures as high as 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 Fahrenheit) had caused slabs of concrete on the runway to buckle and crack. The head of the airport, Raoul Hille, said the damage caused by the high temperatures could not have been foreseen. "There are no sensors for that," he said. However, reports that the affected concrete slabs in Hanover … [Read more...] about Can Germany’s supposedly crumbling infrastructure hold up against extreme heat?
Our moral dissonance about flying reminds me of something a Buddhist once told me: "It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do it with love." I am sure he knew as well as I do that our state of mind makes no difference to either exploited people or the environment. Thinking like ethical people makes not a damn of difference unless we also behave like ethical people. When it comes to flying, there seems to be no connection between intention and action. This is partly because the people who are most concerned about the inhabitants of other countries are often those who have travelled widely. Much of the global justice movement consists of people - like me - whose politics were forged by their experiences abroad. While it is easy for us to pour scorn on the drivers of sports utility vehicles, whose politics generally differ from ours, it is rather harder to contemplate a world in which our own freedoms are curtailed, especially the freedoms that shaped us. More painfully, in some … [Read more...] about On the flight path to global meltdown

I write to alert your readers to the extraordinary behaviour of the car hire firm Easirent’s Dublin airport branch. Having paid £48 for the three-day hire, I was talked into taking out extra insurance which would reduce the damage excess to zero – for which I paid £142. The estate car I had booked was not available so we were upgraded to a seven-seater I was told was so new it was unlikely to have any damage on it. As soon as I returned the vehicle, the same agent immediately noted scuff marks to the wing mirror, but assured me that, as I had paid for the insurance, I would not be charged. Then came the bombshell – there was a €70, or £62, admin charge to process this supposedly “new damage”. I have complained to no avail, and have since found terrible reviews of this company. GT, London I have been writing about car hire firms for 15 years and thought I had seen every hidden charge in the book, but this admin fee is arguably the … [Read more...] about Is this £62 Easirent admin fee the greediest yet?
