Two Senate committees were hearing evidence on Tuesday from the officials in charge of security when the US Congress was attacked by supporters of Donald Trump. Some former security officials have blamed apparent intelligence shortcomings for the failure to anticipate the violence of the mob. The invaders, intent on interrupting a session to certify Joe Biden's presidential election victory , smashed through the barriers at the perimeter. Five people died as a result of the violence, including a Capitol Police officer and a woman whom police shot as she tried to smash through the doors of the House chamber with lawmakers still inside. A police reform bill in honour of George Floyd that will ban chokeholds and "qualified immunity" for law enforcement officials has been passed by the US House of Representatives. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would also ban no-knock warrants, mandate data collection on police encounters, prohibit racial and religious profiling and redirect funding to community-based policing programs. The 220-212 vote comes nine months after Mr Floyd , a black man, died when a police officer in Minneapolis pressed a knee on his neck for several minutes. As he died, Mr Floyd was repeatedly heard to say: "I can't breathe." His death in May 2020 prompted massive protests across the US and around the world calling for an end to racial injustice and police brutality.
