The starting gun in the race to replace Theresa May as leader of Britain's Conservative Party was fired as she resigned on Friday morning. But, in all truth, a few of the frontrunners had got a head start, declaring their candidacy weeks before the prime minister stepped down amid Brexit chaos. The job comes with late nights, few holidays and a working environment that makes Games of Thrones look like The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross. May's replacement will face having to arrange a British withdrawal from the European Union in some kind of orderly manner, or risk crashing out with a "no-deal" Brexit. The British parliament may have voted against "no-deal" several times, but it remains the legal default for what will happen on October 31. When the EU granted a six-month extension to Article 50 in March, European Council President Donald Tusk told British politicians "please do not waste this time". And so, with five months to go to the Brexit deadline, Britain's governing Conservative … [Read more...] about Who’s in the running to replace Theresa May?
Is andrea leadsom in the cabinet
The resignation of Andrea Leadsom as leader of the Commons has left Theresa May’s government on the brink of collapse. She stepped down from her cabinet role on Wednesday in “yet another devastating blow for the prime minister”, says PoliticsHome, as bookmakers slashed the odds of May leaving office before the end of June to 4/6. Leadsom was due to announce when the prime minister’s Withdrawal Agreement Bill – the legislation needed to implement the agreement between the UK and EU – would be introduced, but revealed that she could not do it as she did not believe in the plan. She has also indicated she could throw her hat into the ring to succeed May, having dramatically pulled out of the last leadership race in 2016, handing the keys to Downing Street to her rival. What did she do before politics? Leadsom's pre-politics career was in finance, as a banker and fund manager. Aged 30, she was financial institutions director for Barclays and so had a … [Read more...] about Who is Andrea Leadsom?
Commons leader Andrea Leadsom has resigned from the cabinet, saying she no longer believes the government will deliver Brexit . In her resignation letter to Theresa May, she said: "I no longer believe that our approach will deliver on the referendum result". She also said that holding another referendum would be 'dangerously divisive'. Leadsom's resignation comes amid intensifying pressure on Theresa May to quit as prime minister. She added in her letter: “No one has wanted you to succeed more than I have, but I do now urge you to make the right decisions in the interests of the country, this government and our party.” A string of ministers have demanded meetings with the PM. Some are said to be furious about her 'new deal' to encourage MPs to back her withdrawal bill. May has offered MPs a chance to hold a vote on another referendum if they back her Withdrawal Agreement Bill. This legislation is needed to implement the agreement between the UK and EU on the terms of … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns from cabinet position
South Northamptonshire MP Andrea Leadsom has resigned from her role on Theresa May's cabinet saying she doesn't believe the Government's approach will deliver Brexit. The Leader of the House of Commons said she couldn't support a deal that opened the door to a second referendum that would "undermine the union".She also believes there has been "a complete breakdown of collective responsibility" in Mrs May's cabinet."I do not believe we will be a truly sovereign United Kingdom through the deal that is now proposed," Mrs Leadsom wrote in her resignation letter."I have always maintained that a second referendum would be dangerously divisive, and I do not support the Government willingly facilitating such a concession. It would also risk undermining our union which is something I passionately want to see strengthened."There has been such a breakdown of government processes that recent Brexit-related legislative proposals have not been properly scrutinised or approved by cabinet members."The … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns from cabinet over Brexit
Ross Clark 30 March 2019 2:10 PM 30 March 2019 2:10 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp As MP for the constituency which covers Newmarket, health secretary Matt Hancock will have met a few bookmakers in his time. He has even won a horse race himself, of amateur jockeys in a charity event. He will know the Conservative leadership is the sort of open race with appetising prices – not least the 10-1 which William Hill is today offering on him. I have never met Mr Hancock, and can’t say I even particularly like him, but I am sorely tempted to have a flutter. Why? Because Conservative leadership contests, for all their drama, are pretty easy to read. The winner is almost invariably the credible candidate who, at the time of the election, has succeeded in offending the fewest number of Conservatives. Who held negative feelings towards John Major in 1990, or William Hague in 1997? Iain Duncan Smith, perhaps, had ruffled feathers by … [Read more...] about Why Matt Hancock is likely to be the next prime minister
