“Any ideas on the most completed passes ever recorded in a football match?” asks Charlie Welton. Despite locking all our finest boffins into rooms tasked with watching every football match of the last 120 years to add up every pass, we could not get the answer. Instead we fired up the Stat-Signal and Opta mercifully saved us decades of work to review Europe’s top five leagues since 2006-07. Where better to start than at a Barcelona game, as ball-hogging has become a pastime for the Catalonians in the past two decades. Their short-passing heroics has brought them many wins, trophies and kudos, peaking at 988 completed passes in May 2011 against Levante. Inexplicably, they were only able to secure a 1-1 draw. Manchester City collectively tippy-tapped the ball around 942 times in their 5-0 pummelling of Swansea in April 2018. It was not their most successful day of passing, which happened just one month prior when they played Basel off the park in the Champions League in … [Read more...] about Which football team have completed the most passes in a match?
ROMAN ABRAMOVICH made a rare Chelsea appearance as he surprised the women’s team during their tour of Jerusalem. The Blues owner, who is worth around £10.7billion, has not been attending games at Stamford Bridge because of his UK visa issues. Abramovich was banned from entering the country and later pulled his application for a new visa and instead now has Israeli citizenship. It meant he was able to link up with Emma Hayes’ women's squad as they toured Jerusalem's historic sites following a week spent in Israel. Chelsea Women beat Israel's national side 3-1 in Tel Aviv on Tuesday at the Ha Moshava Stadium. But manager Hayes decided to leave Abramovich’s shock appearance a surprise. She told PA: “I didn't tell them where we were going, so that was great to surprise them with that. And they were like giggling teenagers when we went into the room. “But once Millie Bright and Carly Telford went up and asked for pictures, all the girls were asking for … [Read more...] about Roman Abramovich makes rare Chelsea appearance as he surprises women’s team during tour of Jerusalem
These days, the distinctive green tower blocks in the centre of Pristina’s Dardania neighbourhood look out over a school, a library and a caged-off concrete football pitch. This used to be among the toughest parts of the Kosovan capital but those times are long gone. The silence bears no menace and is only broken from somewhere up one of the high-rise blocks, where a child is yelling for his mother. At the bottom, out on the playing surface, there is the occasional thud of boot on ball as two boys – one in full goalkeeping gear, the other responsible for giving him a workout – train with an intensity several notches up from usual Saturday kickabout fare. Two decades ago this was a wild, open square of grass and soil. So much has changed but, right at the top of the tallest building, there is a reminder of what once passed. The grey, squat structure on top of the roof used to be a lookout post for British soldiers deployed to Pristina in 1999, when the Nato-led Kosovo … [Read more...] about ‘The British were our heroes’ – why Kosovans love the England team
Footballers in the women’s Spanish top flight are pressing ahead with their planned strike this weekend, after failing to negotiate a new collective agreement with the clubs since voting to take action last month. Both of Saturday’s Primera División games were postponed with a further six matches affected on Sunday, including Barcelona’s trip to Real Sociedad, and Atlético Madrid’s visit to Valencia. A breakdown in talks over a minimum salary and part-time contracts, after months of negotiations, saw 93% of the players vote in favour of a strike at a meeting in Madrid last month. The Spanish players’ union, the AFE, posted a video on social media featuring a number of top-flight players, including Spain and Atlético midfielder Silvia Meseguer. Players say they are fighting for former and current colleagues, and “for those who will one day be in our place”. On Friday, UDG Tenerife did not to make the trip to Barcelona for their … [Read more...] about Eight games called off as strike in Spanish women’s top flight goes ahead
