Doug Stanglin USA TODAY Published 9:56 AM EST Jan 18, 2019 Back-to-back blasts of bitter Arctic air from Canada are expected to power high winds and heavy snow from the Corn Belt to New England this weekend followed by an ice storm that could paralyze travelers in the Ohio Valley and Northeast. Heavy snow, with blizzard-like conditions, could leave from 30 to 40 inches of snow in parts of interior New England. The National Weather service says the first strong surge of Canadian air over the Plains will re-energize a storm system coming out of the Rockies. The heaviest snow on Friday is forecast for South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, setting up the bitter march to New England. "The storm is expected to become quite intense on Sunday as its center passes near or just south of New York City," the National Weather Service says. "Conditions over interior New England could approach blizzard criteria as the storm brings … [Read more...] about Winter forecast: Arctic blasts threaten blizzards, heavy snow and ice

Doug Stanglin and Ken Alltucker and Richard Wolf USA TODAY Published 10:25 AM EST Dec 15, 2018 WASHINGTON – While President Donald Trump hailed as "great news for America" a federal judge's ruling striking down aspects of the Affordable Care Act, the White House rushed to assure Americans the program will remain in place while the lawsuit is appealed. On Twitter, Trump labeled the ACA an "UNCONSTITUTIONAL disaster!" and called on Republican and Democratic congressional leaders to pass a "STRONG law that provides GREAT healthcare." In a separate statement late Friday, the White House said: “We expect this ruling will be appealed to the Supreme Court. Pending the appeal process, the law remains in place.” With the ruling having no immediate effect, consumers who buy insurance through federal or state marketplaces still can purchase 2019 coverage through Saturday. Southwest Florida won’t see as many visitors this Labor Day, thanks to water woes
Laura Ruane, Laura Layden News-Press; Naples Daily News Published 3:16 p.m. UTC Sep 2, 2018 Best case, the Labor Day weekend brings a welcome three-day splash of visitor spending in Southwest Florida during what’s often the slowest month for tourism. It’s a respite from the more-languid business pace of late summer, which prompted some wag to call the month of September, “Death-tember.” But this holiday weekend isn’t looking like a best case: Far from it. Reports of toxic algal blooms – chiefly red tide and blue-green algae – continue to make national news headlines and social media, keeping some visitors away. Red tide has been worse than usual this year, plaguing Collier and Lee counties, killing off fish and stinking up the air. On top of that, Lee is still cleaning up the toxic blue-green algae tied to Lake Okeechobee discharges. The algae has invaded the Caloosahatchee River and its canals.
