International parental child abduction
A New Zealand woman who wrote to the Prime Minister about international child abduction rules which she said were putting her children at risk has been ordered to return to Australia. The woman, who cannot be named by law to protect her children, said she came to New Zealand with her two pre-school sons to get away from her partner who she claims in court documents was a drug user who was physically and psychologically violent. "He terrified me so much that I fled with the children," the woman said in a letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. She met her partner, an Australian, in London and moved to Australia with him. The relationship declined rapidly after the birth of their second child in 2017. In this case, the Family Court ruled that removing the children was a breach of the father's parenting rights. The Court of Appeal this month upheld that decision and ruled that allegations of grave risk "whether they be domestic violence, financial hardship, or physical or psychological … [Read more...] about Abduction case: woman’s heartbreaking letter to PM
December 20, 2018 02:01 PM Shortly before the end of his journalistic career, misery and glamor crossed paths in the life of Claas Relotius. On the evening of Monday, Dec. 3, Relotius, who had worked for DER SPIEGEL for seven years and had been employed as an editor for the past year and a half, was called onto a stage in Berlin. The jury for the 2018 German Reporter Award was once again of the opinion that he had written the best feature story of the year, this one about a Syrian boy who lived with the belief that he had contributed to the country's civil war through a graffito he had daubed onto a wall in Daraa. The jurors praised the article for its "unparalleled lightness, intimacy and relevance that is never silent regarding the sources on which it is based." The truth, however -- a truth that nobody could have known at that point in time -- is that his sources were anything but clear. Indeed, it is likely that much of it was made up. Inventions. Lies. Quotes, places, … [Read more...] about Reporter Forgery: DER SPIEGEL Reveals Internal Fraud
A woman accused of abducting her son in a case that drew international attention is speaking out in her first U.S. interview. Marcelle Guimaraes, a Houston mother, took her son, Nico, to Brazil in 2013, and never returned. She's a fugitive, wanted by the FBI, and charged with international parental kidnapping. Nico's father has been fighting to bring the boy back to Texas. Now Guimaraes' parents face sentencing on a kidnapping charge for helping their daughter take the now 9-year-old boy to Brazil. They could face as much as three years in prison when they're sentenced Wednesday. Speaking to our Houston affiliate KHOU's Marcelino Benito from Brazil, Guimaraes insisted she was in a life-or-death situation and told us she's the real victim. "The world needs to know the truth because I married a monster," Guimaraes said, adding, "My ex-husband's lies and manipulation has destroyed my family, my whole family." Photos taken inside the home she once shared with her ex-husband, Christopher … [Read more...] about Houston mom accused of abducting son and taking him to Brazil: “The world needs to know the truth”
Children as young as four walk to kindergarten alone in Switzerland. Photo: The Local When a ten-year-old boy went missing for a couple of hours in Basel in November his mother was quick to post a photo and a plea for help on the Basel Expat Facebook page. The post garnered over 500 shares, causing many expat parents to question the safety of their children and the extent of autonomy given to children living in Switzerland. In Switzerland, it is not unusual for children as young as four to make their own way to school and back home. Swiss children are encouraged to explore, play outside for hours without adult supervision and the philosophy ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only badly dressed children’ is upheld. Fortunately, in the case of the missing school boy in Basel, the ten-year-old was safe. He had travelled away from home simply because he was confused about where he was meant to be. Although the community panic ceased upon the boy’s quick … [Read more...] about Parenting: should you raise independent children the ‘Swiss’ way?
