Liz Truss’s plans to slash taxes could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, the boss of Legal & General has said. Nigel Wilson, the influential City grandee and chief executive of the UK’s biggest pensions manager, said that cutting taxes on businesses could boost the attractiveness of Britain as a destination for international investors. Attracting overseas money could soften the blow as the economy heads into a recession, Mr Wilson said. "Reducing the tax burden will be seen by international investors [as a sign] that the country is open for business,” he said. It comes as Ms Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the two candidates vying to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, continue to trade blows about whether immediate tax cuts would boost economic growth or stoke inflation. Ms Truss is in favour of rapidly cutting taxes in the hope it will stimulate economic activity, while Mr Sunak argues that slashing taxes now will only serve to prolong the … [Read more...] about Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief

Over one in five dog owners NEVER brush their pooch’s teeth, study finds
Most dog owners will only clean their pet's teeth on a monthly basis – with more than one in five admitting they NEVER do so, according to a study. A poll of 2,000 dog owners found that nearly a quarter (23%) say their pooch actively dislikes or even hates getting their teeth brushed. The main reactions from dogs are trying to bite the toothbrush (21%) or tensing up (20%) – while one in six (16%) even run away. As a result, 30% of owners are forced to distract their furry friend to get them to cooperate, with one in three (32%) having to bribe them with treats. However, 17% clean their dog’s teeth several times a week, and more than one in four (27%) carry out checks in the same time frame. Giving their dog dental chews (53%), brushing with dog toothpaste (52%), and using chew toys (36%), were the most common ways people cleaned their furry friend's teeth. Dr Jayne Laycock, resident vet at YuMOVE, which created its Dental Care Sticks to restore the balance of good and bad … [Read more...] about Over one in five dog owners NEVER brush their pooch’s teeth, study finds

How to get into football for fitness and fun from the women in the sport
With the Lionesses scoring freely through Euro 2022, it’s the driving force needed to get more women and girls involved in football in the UK. Sadly, females represent just 2% of people playing the sport, according to Jim Law of the Findaplayer website, which helps locate local teams and events. Reassuringly though, that number is expected to rise dramatically this year, with more than 6,500 active female-only or mixed games across the nation. Whether it’s on a competitive or social level, there are so many reasons to give football a go. Euro 2022 tournament sponsor Visa commissioned a report into women’s football, Women Thriving On And Off The Pitch, which showed that: Three quarters of those who play team sport say it has had a positive impact on their business life. Half of those who play a team sport say it helps them deal with stress, tiredness or being overworked. Visa ambassador Karen Carney MBE, who has 144 caps for England, says: ‘The biggest eye-opener … [Read more...] about How to get into football for fitness and fun from the women in the sport

Islamic State conflict: Two Britons killed in RAF Syria strike
Published 7 September 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Two British Islamic State jihadists who died in Syria were killed by an RAF drone strike, David Cameron has said. Cardiff-born Reyaad Khan, 21, and Ruhul Amin, from Aberdeen, died last month in Raqqa, alongside another fighter, in the first targeted UK drone attack on a British citizen, Mr Cameron told MPs. Khan - the target - had been plotting "barbaric" attacks on UK soil, he said. The "act of self defence" was lawful, despite MPs previously ruling out UK military action in Syria, the PM said. Khan was killed in a precision strike on 21 August by a remotely piloted aircraft, "after meticulous planning", while he was travelling in a vehicle. Disturbing rise in children between seven and 10 filming their own sexual abuse
The UK is suffering a ‘social and digital emergency’ because of huge spikes in kids recording their abuse, a report says. Almost 20,000 children between seven and 10 who were sexually abused online in the first six months of this year were forced or manipulated into filming it themselves, the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has found. This is nearly 8,000 more cases of ‘self-generated abuse’ than the near 12,000 cases recorded for the same period last year. It’s the second year in a row these numbers have seen an alarming rise. Since the UK’s first lockdown in March 2020, there has been a 360% increase in self-generated abusive images. This is likely due to a combination of lockdowns keeping children at home, with more time online and organisations like IWF’s improved techniques in finding the right material. The IWF’s hotline manager, Susie Hargreaves, told The Guardian : ‘This is not some alleyway or dark basement. It is in family homes. Sometimes you can hear … [Read more...] about Disturbing rise in children between seven and 10 filming their own sexual abuse
Making work friends is hard, but doing it can make you more ‘happy and satisfied’ – here’s how
There are many ways to improve your performance at work. You could do some physical activity beforehand to strengthen mental health , for example. You could write down your priorities to heighten productivity . And you could treat yourself to that large latte to get a boost of positive energy. Another element of work life that could ultimately improve both that and your performance: Having friends at work. In fact, women who say they have a best friend at work are more than twice as likely to be engaged in what they're doing, according to a 2018 Gallup poll . Especially for those who've been working from home since the pandemic , the modern workplace can pose some … [Read more...] about Making work friends is hard, but doing it can make you more ‘happy and satisfied’ – here’s how
