The sometimes difficult pairing of family life and a career in the fire service

August 18, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

Nights are the worst for Hayley Gilmour. Her firefighter husband Isaac sometimes works more than 70 hours a week because, she says, no one else is available to cover the shifts. The 70-hour weeks mean he’s often working overnight, leaving Gilmour and the kids at home by themselves. She says the conditions firefighters are striking over on Friday is one side of the issue. The families left at home picking up the pieces is another. Jessica Raine: I was a little bit ashamed of wanting to be an actress – I associated them with a falseness

September 23, 2017 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Jessica Raine has just finished watching The Handmaid’s Tale , and is incensed because, she tells me, she got there first. ‘I had the idea to bring The Handmaid’s Tale to TV a couple of years ago and I brought it to a producer and they were like, “Oh my God, that’s such a great idea.” And then we discovered it had been snapped up [by Elisabeth Moss]. It’s amazing, but how annoying!’ She may have missed out on the chance to bring Margaret Atwood’s dystopian masterpiece to the small screen, but the 35-year-old British actress isn’t exactly short of high-profile TV roles – far from it. After working in theatre, Jessica made her name in 2012 when she was chosen to play the lead in one of the most popular period dramas of the decade. As Jenny Lee, the prim and proper young nurse in Call the Midwife, the BBC’s warm-hearted drama about midwifery in post-war London, she had us weeping every Sunday evening as the nation took the series firmly into its heart. Viewing figures topped 10 … [Read more...] about Jessica Raine: I was a little bit ashamed of wanting to be an actress – I associated them with a falseness

December 29, 2017 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The British actor James Norton has said he is not afraid about the response to his upcoming Russian mafia show as he has already received death threats of his role in Happy Valley. Norton, who is tipped as the next James Bond, starred in the Bafta-winning crime drama as Tommy Lee Royce, a psychopath and violent ex-convict who abducts and ties up a young woman. He revealed that his portrayal of the character led to death threats from members of the public, meaning he has no concerns about his safety when the BBC’s new big budget drama McMafia airs in January. “Some people have asked me if I’m worried about getting death threats for exposing how the Russian mafia works,” Norton told Radio Times magazine. “That would be nothing new. Playing Tommy Lee Royce, I’d get death threats buying milk in my local shop.” Norton, 32, will play the lead role of McMafia, the corporation’s forthcoming adaptation of British journalist Misha Glenny’s best-selling non-fiction book about … [Read more...] about James Norton: ‘I got death threats when I was buying the milk after Happy Valley’

With annexation pledge, Netanyahu might have bitten off more than he can chew | Opinion

June 12, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

Next Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman is scheduled to join a meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Benny Gantz, and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi. The purpose of the meeting is to resolve differences between the positions of Netanyahu and Gantz/Ashkenazi on the issue of Israel's proposed unilateral annexations of part of the West Bank; land captured by Israel 53 years ago this week. Sunday's meeting will be the second time Friedman has taken the unprecedented step of directly interfering in Israel's domestic affairs, in a manner and direction that has never been done before. Granted, U.S. ambassadors have always been very public figures in Israel. But they never became openly involved in disputes within the Israeli government—and certainly never to push a point of view that has been antithetical to the position held by successive U.S. administrations for the past 53 years. The topic of the meeting is, whether, and how much of the West … [Read more...] about With annexation pledge, Netanyahu might have bitten off more than he can chew | Opinion
