Lolita the killer whale may return to mother after decades in captivity
Lolita the captive killer whale could finally return home to her mom after living in captivity for 52 years. Lolita, also known as Tokitae, is one of the most famous captive orcas in the world. The 56-year-old orca lives at Miami Seaquarium, in the smallest captive orca tank in North America, where she has been since 1970. She is the last surviving killer whale out of 45 that were originally captured and delivered for display in aquariums between 1965 and 1973. These were some of the first orcas ever kept in captivity. Animal welfare groups have been campaigning for Lolita's release for years. And now, this looks like more of a possibility. Lolita was originally captured from a pod of southern resident whales living off British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. And her mother, is still believed to roam the waters—experts believe it is a 93-year-old whale called L25 or "Ocean Sun, " however there is no evidence to corroborate this. According to The Guardian , Miami … [Read more...] about Lolita the killer whale may return to mother after decades in captivity

Moldova ships in radiation pills as fighting rages near Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine
Moldova has imported one million iodine pills as fighting rages around a nuclear power station in neighbouring Ukraine. The eastern European country - with a population of 2.5 million people - insisted residents should not panic as it upped its stockpile of the tablets which can prevent radioactive elements building up in the body. Shelling has intensified near Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant - the largest of its kind in Europe - with the UN warning fighting could "lead to disaster". Now Moldova, which borders Ukraine and is 480km from the power station, has shipped in iodine pills donated by Romania, to be taken in case of a nuclear emergency. The pills, which were donated by Romania, work to stop radioactive iodine from being absorbed into people's thyroid glands, which can develop cancer if infected by radiation. But Moldova's government says it has seen no increase in radiation levels and said people must wait for official instruction before … [Read more...] about Moldova ships in radiation pills as fighting rages near Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine

A ‘next generation’ coronavirus booster jab – which would only need administering once a year – has been approved for use in adults. The UK is first to adopt the new method. Stephane Bancel, chief executive officer at Moderna, described it as a ‘next generation Covid-19 vaccine’ which will play an ‘important role in protecting people in the UK from Covid-19’ over the winter.
