Many women opt to groom their pubic hair these days, whether it's by waxing or shaving, and some opt to do so ahead of giving birth. But a midwife has shared her wisdom with BabyCentre UK on why you shouldn't shave or wax before giving birth - and there's a very good reason for it. Dr Cate Bell, a practising midwife in Sussex and a hypnobirthing practitioner, said: "Our current advice is that you don't shave or wax your pubic area just prior to giving birth "This increases your risk of an infection especially if you have an operative procedure like a Caesarean section". THE debate about whether to go hair-free in your private areas has long been raging as doctors have warned that removing pubic hair can increase the risk of an STI. However, a huge percentage of women still choose to go bare down there - so what are the best options? Is it safe to remove your pubic hair? Last year, a survey in JAMA Dermatology found that about a quarter of people who groomed their pubic hair by shaving, waxing or using scissors had experienced injuries. The most common accidents were cuts, followed by rashes or burns. Researchers also found that 1.5 per cent of groomers have sustained injuries that required medical attention. The study was carried out by Dr Benjamin Brever, a urologist at the University of California San Franciso.
