Darts majors could leave UK and World Series replaced as Barry Hearn sets out PDC plan
Barry Hearn says it is inevitable that some of the major tournaments in the darts calendar will move away from the UK in the future as the PDC’s global expansion of the sport continues. The bulk of the majors take place in England, including the World Grand Prix which has recently moved to Leicester, first due to the pandemic and then because its traditional venue, Dublin’s Citywest Convention Centre, is housing Ukrainian refugees. The PDC have ambitious plans for the sport, which is looking to gain a foothold in America and held the US Darts Masters at New York’s Madison Square Garden as part of the World Series in June. The objective of the invitational World Series is to grow the game worldwide, with its next three events taking place in Australia and New Zealand this month. James Wade column: I dashed back from Barnsley for son’s birth before heading Down Under
It’s not often I am delighted to be on double one, but I couldn’t be happier to announce that my wife Samantha and I have now got a second child in the Wade household. Our youngest son, Alfie, was born on Thursday and after some early worries, both mother and baby are now home safe and healthy. It was a bit of a mad dash for me, as I was at the Players Championship events in Barnsley on Wednesday. While I was keen to focus on the job at hand, it is far easier said than done when your mind is hundreds of miles away worrying about your family. With the benefit of hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have gone to Barnsley as my heart was at home with Samantha, but I have always wanted to give my all to the game and try to pick up ranking points wherever possible. It was just difficult to do myself justice. Another week of high temperatures means no respite for much of drought-hit France
In Seillans, southeast France, the stream is dry, a fountain near the town hall no longer flows and the ground is parched. The village, like much of France, is in the grip of the country's worst-ever drought. "I've lived here for 17 years, and I've never seen this," says the chief of police, Phillipe Grenêche. "Since April, not a drop of water... it's sad." One of the village's boreholes has virtually dried up, so Phillipe is taking us to see the emergency supplies many residents now rely on. On the rocky hillside, a white truck pulls up and the driver, Daniel, begins to pump water into the system. Advertisement He repeats the trip eight times a day, so the taps don't run dry. To make supplies stretch, people are limited to 200 litres a day. Gurinder Chadha: ‘People get defensive about the British Empire but it’s our shared history’
When she was growing up, film-maker Gurinder Chadha was captivated by a photograph which took pride of place on the mantelpiece in her family’s front room in Southall, west London. For years she assumed the dashing man in a jewel-bedecked turban must be a relative; only later did she understand his true significance. “He was Maharaja Sir Duleep Singh, the last king of the Sikhs,” she says. “He ruled Punjab, my ancestral home – vast, powerful territories stretching from Afghanistan to China.” That is, until Duleep Singh was deposed by the British Raj, exiled to Britain as a teenager and forced to give the Koh-i-Noor diamond, the most dazzling of his dynasty’s treasures , to Queen Victoria. For Chadha’s family, that photograph was symbolic not just of past glories from the land of their forefathers, but of the deeply complex shared history between two nations – Britain and India - that had brought them as immigrants to this country. “As soon as you mention the word ‘Empire’, people … [Read more...] about Gurinder Chadha: ‘People get defensive about the British Empire but it’s our shared history’
