A MASSIVE 6.8 magnitude earthquake has sparked fears of a tsunami in Indonesia today. Locals in Sulawesi have been ordered to evacuate to higher ground after the country's geophysics agency says a tsunami is possible after the huge shaker struck east of the island. The US Geological Survey said the quake which hit this morning 174 miles south of the island's province of Gorontalo at a depth of 10.5 miles. Geophysics agency spokesman Taufan Maulana said: “It is clear that the quake has tsunami potential. Residents are advised to evacuate as soon possible." The agency is monitoring for high waves as the quake had the potential to trigger a tsunami, a statement read, adding: “The first wave may not be the biggest.” Local resident Gina Saerang, who lives in Manado and was several hundred kilometres from the epicentre, said the quake was "strong and long lasting." AT least 222 people have been killed and 834 injured by a tsunami caused by earthquakes struck the coast of Indonesia. The waves came without warning, destroying hundreds of buildings, sweeping away cars and uprooting trees. Where did the earthquakes strike? It is believed that undersea landslides from the Anak Krakatau volcano caused them. The volcano is situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java and is some 97 miles from Indonesia's capital Jakarta. Anak Krakatau means "Child of Krakatoa" because of its formation in 1930 after the eruption of neighbouring giant volcano Krakatoa. The tsunami struck on Saturday at 9:30pm local time (2:30pm GMT) during a local holiday. It hit several popular tourist destinations including the Tanjung Lesung beach resort west of Java island. A FIVE-year-old boy has been pulled alive from the rubble in a tsunami devastated area of Indonesia after police heard his cries. At least 843 people were injured and about 30 are missing, with officials warning the death toll will rise as some areas have not as yet been reached. Video shows the tearful youngster being taken away by rescuers after local police said he was pulled him from a car which had been trapped under fallen trees. At the start of the footage, the boy’s cries can be heard as a rescuer shines a torch into where he is trapped. Debris surrounding the boy - named as Ali on social media- was carefully removed and he was pulled out. Though covered in mud and clearly upset, he was taken to safety in the arms of a police officer. An earthquake has rocked Indonesia - 168km from the town of Jayapura. The 6.2 magnitude quake struck around 168 km (101 miles) southwest of the town on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. The USGS first reported the earthquake at a 6.1 magnitude at a distance of 174 km from Jayapura. Deep tremors from the quake can reportedly be felt throughout both Indonesia and Papua New Giunea.
