Cost of living: Disability charity says carers are skipping meals

July 6, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A national charity supporting children with disabilities says more than 90% of the families it helps are struggling to pay bills due to rising living costs. Half of carers looking after disabled youngsters have skipped meals in the past 12 months to cut back on spending, a survey by Family Fund suggests. A West Yorkshire family supported by the charity say they are "scared" they won't be able to afford winter heating. The government said it was helping families with disabled children. York-based Family Fund said many families with seriously ill or disabled children faced higher energy bills due to the need to power home medical equipment. Frequent GP or hospital appointments mean regular car journeys for many, including the family of 11-year-old Charlie, from Bingley in West Yorkshire. DUP deal to prop up minority Tory Government set to cost billions as party hints it will be ‘back for more’

June 26, 2017 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The Democratic Unionist Party’s £1 billion deal to prop up the Conservative government may end up costing the country far more because the DUP will be “back for more”, it emerged last night. The Tories finally sealed a historic deal with the Northern Irish party which guarantees its 10 MPs will vote with the Government on key legislation, in return for which cash will go to Belfast for infrastructure, broadband, schools and hospitals. But the £1billion payment - the equivalent of £33 for every taxpayer in the UK - could be only the start after DUP sources hinted that they will ask for more cash when the deal is “reviewed” in two years’ time. The SNP reacted by immediately demanding more money for Scotland, while the Welsh government claimed it should be given £1.7 bn to achieve parity with Ulster. Sinn Fein, meanwhile, claimed the deal threatened the Good Friday Agreement. After 18 days of negotiations, the DUP leader Arlene Foster flew to London yesterday to oversee the … [Read more...] about DUP deal to prop up minority Tory Government set to cost billions as party hints it will be ‘back for more’

July 6, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Mared Ifan & Elen Davies Published 1 hour ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A chocolate manufacturer in Wales has said it is feeling the pinch as the cost of living continues to rise. The "astronomical" costs of electricity, heating and ingredients have led to companies like Wickedly Welsh Chocolate having to raise prises. It is the first time since the company was established eight years ago that Wickedly Welsh has increased prices. Co-director of the Pembrokeshire-based company Karen Owen called it "a really tough time". "We have made changes, we've brought equipment in to help us with efficiency in the factory, to improve what we do and how we do it, so that we're as efficient as possible and continue to give quality products to our customers, but at a price that's still affordable to them," said Ms Owen. July 6, 2022 by www.theadvocate.com

The escalating price of a typical home in Lafayette Parish has outpaced wage growth in second quarter. The area, like many others in Louisiana and across the country, had its home affordability index drop in the quarter as prices have escalated due to the rise in buyer demand, according to data released by real estate research firm ATTOM Data Solutions in its Home Affordability Report . July 6, 2022 by www.dailystar.co.uk

Corinthians have ruthlessly trolled Boca Juniors star Dario Benedetto after the striker missed two crucial penalties to send the Brazilian outfit through to the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. The two sides locked horns once again in a feisty clash in Argentina after the first leg of the last 16 tie ended goalless in Brazil. Neither team were able to break the deadlock again - but Benedetto did have a golden chance to change that. The 32-year-old could have given Boca Juniors the lead from the spot in the first-half - but he failed to convert his penalty. And the Argentine ace had his head in his hands again when he missed another spot-kick in a tense shootout to decide the match.
