IN a shocking attack that stunned the world 20 years ago, a baby girl was snatched from her mother and killed by an adult chimpanzee while the pair were walking through a national park. The infant's partially-eaten corpse was discovered in a tree, leading to widespread calls to have the chimp , Frodo, put down. From an early age, Frodo was large and aggressive. Born on June 30, 1976, in Gombe National Park, Tanzania , he was part of the Gombe chimp community made famous by the British anthropologist and primatologist Dame Jane Goodall. He was born in the midst of the Gombe Chimpanzee Wars, which raged for four years in the 1970s between two rival chimp communities in the park. Dr Goodall named him Frodo after the Lord of the Rings character as she was reading the books to her son at the time. Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Late on a fall afternoon, a skeleton crew staffed the cafeteria at New Canaan High School, in Connecticut. Custodial workers cleaned up the day’s remains while one of the cooks prepped for the evening’s athletic banquet. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. A woman entered quietly through the back door, the one designated for deliveries and employees. She wore a jacket over a loose gown. She clutched something to her chest that appeared to be a bag connected to an IV. “What are you doing here?” one of the workers asked. The woman said nothing. She shuffled to her small office. The door clicked shut. The workers exchanged looks. They’d heard that Marie Wilson had been undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She had every right to stay home and rest. Yet here she was, hobbling into the kitchen near sunset, reporting for duty. There would be more days like this one. Days when Wilson endured life’s worst moments—a grandson’s leukemia … [Read more...] about Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Here are five new high speed rail technologies that make Britain’s HS2 seem outdated already
Boris Johnson has given the green light for a high speed rail project connecting London to northern England, saying he would take a firmer grip on a project that is behind schedule and running billions of pounds over budget. HS2, the high speed line will slash journey times and add capacity to Britain's crowded network, allowing the UK to catch up with countries like France and Spain which have extensive high-speed rail. But out of date and spiraling over budget, the HS2 project (High Speed 2) has been slammed in an unpublished Government report that warns costs could continue to rise another 20pc. While the first phase of construction has only just begun, the project is already far above its original budget of £34bn. With the line not expected to begin operations until at least 2028, there are fears the new service will be out of date by the time it is ultimately deployed. There are already new technologies being developed that could supplant parts of HS2 or provide … [Read more...] about Here are five new high speed rail technologies that make Britain’s HS2 seem outdated already
Hydrogen-powered trains could be carrying UK passengers by 2023
New hydrogen-powered trains are being trialled on British rail lines for the first time, and the Government has said they could be carrying passengers by 2023. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps was aboard a low-carbon HydroFLEX train for its inaugural journey on Tuesday, along lines between Long Marston, in Warwickshire and Evesham. It is hoped the new technology will allow ministers to start retrofitting old diesel trains from 2023 to make them more eco-friendly and decarbonise non-electrified lines. Alongside the new train trials, the Government also unveiled a host of other hydrogen projects, including funding for 19 hydrogen-powered refuse trucks in Glasgow as well as for research into cleaner mass hydrogen production. In an exclusive oped for the Telegraph , Mr Shapps said Britain’s role in developing clean hydrogen technologies could help put it at the forefront of new industrial ‘green revolution’. He said: “While Britain’s pioneering role in the industrial … [Read more...] about Hydrogen-powered trains could be carrying UK passengers by 2023

Trump says U.S. will try to stop Armenia, Azerbaijan war as nations urge calm
President Donald Trump has said his administration is looking "very strongly" at an outbreak of violence between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, which has left dozens dead and raised fears of a broader war between the Caucasus neighbors. At least 24 people have been killed in fighting that broke out over the weekend and continued into Monday, the Guardian reported. The two sides have long been at loggerheads over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is internationally-recognized Azeri land but is controlled by ethnic Armenians as the self-declared Republic of Artsakh. The two nations went to war between 1988–94 over the region, which broke away from Azerbaijan after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since then there have been sporadic border clashes. This weekend's violence is the most significant since 2016, when hundreds of troops on both sides were killed during a spate of border fighting. Heavy artillery, helicopter gunships and … [Read more...] about Trump says U.S. will try to stop Armenia, Azerbaijan war as nations urge calm
Tinder Clashes With AIDS Healthcare Foundation Over STD Billboard
The popular dating app Tinder was miffed by a new campaign promoting free testing for sexually transmitted diseases launched by the Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation. The advertisements in question—which an AHF spokesman says appear on more than 20 billboards and 100 bus benches in the L.A. area—depict two pairs of silhouettes: "Tinder" faces "chlamydia," and "Grindr" looks at "gonorrhea." On the right-hand side, the ad directs people to freeSTDcheck.org . "Mobile dating apps are rapidly altering the sexual landscape by making casual sex as easily available as ordering a pizza," Whitney Engeran-Cordova, senior director of AHF's public health division, is quoted as saying in the foundation's press release describing the campaign's September 18 launch. He continued: In many ways, location-based mobile dating apps are becoming a digital bathhouse for millennials wherein the next sexual encounter can literally just be a few feet away—as well as the next STD. While … [Read more...] about Tinder Clashes With AIDS Healthcare Foundation Over STD Billboard

Should Dating Apps Help Promote Safe Sex?
Digital dating services have helped millions of people worldwide find intimacy and romance. For the most part, meeting strangers online is no longer viewed as taboo. A poll conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2013 found 59 percent of Americans believe the Internet is a perfectly respectable place to seek out partners. Websites such as OkCupid and phone apps like Tinder and Grindr allow users to connect with a large and diverse pool of people. But some critics say that while these platforms have expanded options for many people looking for love or sex, it's also increased public health risk. To some, this raises the question of whether the multi-billion dollar online dating industry should be doing more to encourage safe sex. Earlier this week, Rhode Island health officials reported that the state has seen an uptick in a number of STDs over the last year, and they believe dating apps are playing a role in this rise. Between 2013 and 2014, the number of people diagnosed in the … [Read more...] about Should Dating Apps Help Promote Safe Sex?
