Air quality in Dutch city centers will meet European standards by the end of this year, according to a new prognoses State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure presented to parliament on Monday. To help achieve this goal, Van Veldhoven is pushing 10 million euros extra into measures to improve air quality in Amsterdam, Arnhem, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Utrecht, ANP reports. Part of the extra money will go towards subsidies for electric cars in Amsterdam, according to the news wire. Bram van Liere, deputy campaign manager for traffic at Milieudefensie, is pleased with the extra investment. "It is a first step towards the exceedance of the air quality standards in the city centers now being resolved faster than the government had previously planned", he said. Van Veldhoven also expects that the problems of air quality standards being exceeded in Nederweert and Someren due to livestock farming will be resolved by 2030 at the latest. The plan includes a focus on hotspots identified in the borough and support for residents to be able to protect themselves at times when pollution levels are high. Councillor Viddy Persaud, cabinet member for public protection and safety, said: “We want Havering to become an even greener borough than it already is. “Our priority is to protect and provide ways in which residents can continue to lead healthy and happy lives and part of that is improving the air in which they breathe. “We have taken into consideration what residents have told us and aim to carry out what is … [Read more...] about Green light for action plan to improve air quality in Havering
North Lincolnshire Council is working with employers in Scunthorpe to to improve the air quality after the town was named as the most polluted in the UK. As part of Clean Air Day, it is also asking residents to think about how they can cut emissions from their cars and homes. If you usually drive to work or drive your children to school, why not make it your mission to find an different method; you could dust off your bike, lace up your walking shoes, use public transport or car share with a colleague. Did you know that 25 per cent of all car journeys in the UK are under two miles? Vehicles on our roads are also responsible for 80 per cent of the UK’s Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) pollution, with pollutants coming from both exhaust fumes and brake and tyre wear. Replacing car journeys with active travel – walking and … [Read more...] about Council working with employers to improve air quality
Residents who are lobbying for Camberwell station to reopen staged a demonstration on Camberwell Green last Saturday, to highlight the impact of high levels of traffic pollution in the area. The group hopes Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes will hand a 2000-signature petition to reopen the station to the Minister of State for Transport, Jo Johnson, on May 15, Campaigner Sophy Tayler, says: “We are worried TfL is shunting this important project into the sidings.” She says documents obtained by the group from TfL focusing on the proposals do not include full air pollution and traffic studies. She told the News: “The studies fail to take seriously traffic pollution, slow bus services, growing population and difficult access to hospitals in Camberwell. “These issues will continue unless there is a step change in transport options. “More rail users come from outside London, than get on at Camberwell, so we don’t get a high enough benefit cost ratio to boost … [Read more...] about Reopen Camberwell Station to improve air quality, residents tell Transport for London.
REDUCING air pollution could be as effective at cutting crime as employing thousands more police officers, a study suggests. Researchers analysed data on 1.8million crimes over two years and compared them with pollution in the borough at the time. It showed the crime rate in London soared by 8.4 per cent on the days when smog was at its worst. Criminality was 2.8 per cent higher when air pollution hit 35 or above – as experienced in the capital on one day out of four. The effect was greatest for less severe crimes, such as shop lifting and pick-pocketing, and there was no significant impact on murder, rape and the most serious assaults. It is thought pollution increases levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body.
