ARMISTICE Day is marked on the same date in the UK every year - November 11. Below we explain the history behind this important day of remembrance and how it differs from Remembrance Sunday. What is Armistice Day and why is it important? Armistice Day remembers the agreement between the Allies and Germany on November 11, 1918, to stop fighting which marked victory for the Allies and defeat for Germany. It was signed in Compiegne in Northern France and came into effect at 11am. The armistice forced the Germans to evacuate invaded countries and territories within two weeks. Although hostilities continued in some areas, the armistice essentially brought an end to fours years of fighting in the First World War. While most people will be chowing down on turkey and ham on Christmas Day, a couple from Devon will be having "roast venison a la roadkill" for their festive meal. Driven by a desire to reduce waste, Jim Alexander, 41, has recovered nearly 50 dead animals - including deer, pheasant, rabbits and even badgers - from roads near his house in Torquay, Devon, in 2018 alone. But not everyone is impressed with his efforts to eat more sustainably, with his girlfriend's family branding him a "serial killer". On December 25 Jim, who butchers the meat at home, will be celebrating with his beauty therapist girlfriend Betina Bradshaw, 54, by tucking into a roast roadkill venison leg, saying: "I know people will think it's unusual but really it just makes sense. "Betina's family all think I'm a complete weirdo for doing it and think that I'm a serial killer. "But actually, I do it because I can't stand to see the waste of life, and by taking the animals home and eating them I'm at least somehow … [Read more...] about Couple reveal they will have ROADKILL for dinner on Christmas Day
Call the cops It was 1971, I was 11. We had “the discussion” and my mother had prepared a kit for me in anticipation of the onset of womanhood – it was all very scary – hidden away in my wardrobe waiting for me. The sanitary towels were so thick I thought I would have to walk like John Wayne and the belt looked like an instrument of torture. Then I saw a small ad – I think it was in Jackie magazine – offering trial tampons if I sent a stamp and my address – easy and discreet, I thought. About a week later I came home from school to find a small box open on the kitchen table and my parents looking furious. Dad was still in his police uniform, the panda car parked outside. The package had arrived and my mother saw my name (I never got sent parcels and this was the time of the IRA bombs and police were particularly at risk). She panicked and called my father at the police station. The package was collected in a police car and taken to … [Read more...] about The day I got my first period
