After two years of finishing in last place, and more than a decade since we made the top 10, Sam Ryder is second favourite to win with his uplifting power ballad Space Man. But Ryder is trying to ignore the mounting excitement. "I don't want to get to a point where I start believing the hype," he says. "I just want to do everyone proud, and do the best job I possibly can." Former winner Conchita Wurst is more willing to speculate on his chances. "The buzz in the Eurovision community is, 'Oh, the UK is participating again,'" she told the BBC last month. "No offence to all the other artists who have come before... but this year it feels like, … [Read more...] about Eurovision 2022: Sam Ryder is ‘ignoring the hype’ as the UK’s odds improve

The Tour Bus That Crashed the Oscars—and Hollywood’s Bubble
If the last-minute twist at the Oscars was seen to echo all the last-minute twists in American culture lately—the Super Bowl, the election—a silly five-minute segment earlier in the night should be noted for what it captured about the country’s ongoing tensions and tastes in iPhone peripherals. Host Jimmy Kimmel’s team arranged for a sightseeing bus of supposedly “real” tourists to walk into the room, expecting a museum exhibit about the Oscars but instead finding themselves in the middle of the actual thing. “Welcome to the Dolby Theater,” Kimmel announced. “This is the home of the Academy Awards, which are, in fact, happening right now.” The greatest Hollywood tour bus trip EVER ... @StarLineTours #Oscars pic.twitter.com/hUsuhPQf0I — Jimmy Kimmel (@jimmykimmel) February 27, 2017 The bit was both amusing and squirmy: a weird microcosm of Hollywood’s relationship with America, America’s relationship with the media, and Jimmy Kimmel’s ability to make everything a … [Read more...] about The Tour Bus That Crashed the Oscars—and Hollywood’s Bubble

The Prime Minister did not rule out introducing a levy on the excess profits of energy firms but he made clear his opposition to the policy. He told LBC Radio: “I don’t like them [windfall taxes]. I don’t think they are the right way forward. I want those companies to make big, big investment.” The Government has argued that imposing an additional tax on the companies would damage their ability to invest in crucial new energy sources for the UK. Club Rugby review week 2 New Plymouth Old Boys (NPOB) and Stratford/Eltham are early contenders to host Taranaki club finals day in July. In a new initiative this year, the top club after the first three weeks of play across premier, division one and colts grades will host the popular day scheduled for Saturday, July 23. Putin must learn Soviet empire isn’t coming back: Latvia minister
Latvian Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Artis Pabriks has urged his NATO partners to make clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that his ongoing invasion of Ukraine cannot end in victory, but only in costly defeat. Speaking with Newsweek on the sidelines of the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn, Estonia, on Sunday, Pabriks said Putin is bent on restoring the Soviet Union and must be shown with force that this is not possible. "The question is how Russia will lose," Pabriks said of the ongoing invasion, in which Russia troops again appear largely stalled, this time in the eastern Donbas region. Moscow's assault on Kyiv failed in March and now its effort to seize Ukraine's easternmost province also appears in danger of collapse. "They must be made to understand that they will lose," said Pabriks, who since the invasion began in February has been outspoken on the need for Latvia's European Union and NATO allies to do more to support Kyiv and defeat Russia. … [Read more...] about Putin must learn Soviet empire isn’t coming back: Latvia minister
I Went to Disney World
Earlier this month, Walt Disney World began reopening, following almost four months of closure due to the pandemic. I flew to Orlando to experience the magic. The week I arrived, Florida had registered the highest single-day case count of any state thus far. In Orlando’s airport, I felt a vague sense that Floridians considered such statistics a source of secret pride, as if they had set a record for fattest alligator or ugliest serial killer or most senior citizens in a golf cart. The airport where I had started my day, in Connecticut, had required masks, and everyone wore them. Here in Florida, some passengers went totally unmasked, but most wore masks in a defiant fashion, either slung under their chin or with their nostrils gaping out over the top, sucking and spewing potentially viral particles with every breath. A friend who lives a couple of hours away in St. Petersburg likens this latter style to “wearing a condom that covers only the shaft.” Disney World is in Florida only … [Read more...] about I Went to Disney World
Northern Ireland: Boris Johnson battles on two fronts as Brexit protocol returns to haunt him
Boris Johnson heads to Northern Ireland on Monday to try to break political deadlock in the UK territory which also threatens to bring to a head differences with the EU over post-Brexit trading arrangements. At the heart of the disputes is the international treaty the British prime minister negotiated in 2019 to secure the UK's departure from the European Union, breaking a long impasse. The government says it will have "no choice but to act" unless the Northern Ireland Protocol is reformed, amid reports that it is about to introduce legislation to unravel it. It insists it wants to reform the agreement, not scrap it. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), long opposed to the protocol, came second in recent elections and is refusing to form a government, or even allow the Northern Ireland Assembly to sit, while the treaty's provisions remain in force. Under power-sharing rules set up as part of Northern Ireland’s peace process, a government can’t be formed without the … [Read more...] about Northern Ireland: Boris Johnson battles on two fronts as Brexit protocol returns to haunt him
Australia election: The outsiders who could reshape Australia’s politics
By Phil Mercer Published 5 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Australia election 2022 Affluent and multi-cultural North Sydney has traditionally been a safe seat for Australia's ruling coalition. But its leafy streets and upmarket cafes disguise its part in a bruising political contest that could decide the Australian election on 21 May. As in other high-profile urban electorates held by the Liberal-National government, so-called teal independents (because of a campaign colour preference) are mounting a serious challenge that focuses heavily on climate action, integrity in politics and gender representation. They're bankrolled by the Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court and his Climate200 Group, as well as other smaller donors. In North Sydney, the sitting MP Trent Zimmerman has acknowledged he is under pressure from Kylea Tink, a … [Read more...] about Australia election: The outsiders who could reshape Australia’s politics
Red Wall voters understand state doesn’t always know best, says Boris Johnson’s policy chief
A casual observer of British politics may have missed that a quiet revolution has taken place in Number 10 , the significance of which has yet to be fully appreciated. Boris Johnson has in recent months replaced his chief of staff , communications director and top civil servant in his private office and scores of other senior advisers in a total overhaul of his inner circle. The shake-up was partly by design – an attempt to draw a line under the “partygate” scandal – and partly a reflection of political weakness and outside demands. It means many of those now by the Prime Minister’s side throughout the day were not there in January. They remain little known or discussed, for now at least. Which leads us to Andrew Griffith. The MP for Arundel and South Downs is by no means a household name, having only entered Parliament in December 2019 election. But this February he was handed one of the most influential roles in Downing Street – director of the Number 10 Policy … [Read more...] about Red Wall voters understand state doesn’t always know best, says Boris Johnson’s policy chief
