ZAYN Malik had better ask for some hits on his Christmas list. The one-time One Direction superstar’s career appears to be in ruins, with his second solo album, Icarus Falls, flopping in the charts, where on Tuesday night it was sat at No64. The 27-song collection has only shifted 1,730 copies in the UK, taking in physical sales, downloads and streams, since it was released on Friday. In comparison, The Greatest Showman soundtrack, now in its 52nd week of release, is due to log a 23rd week at No1 on Friday, having shifted 32,563 copies in the past four days. Zayn’s last three albums with 1D and his 2016 solo debut Mind Of Mine all went in at No1. A music insider said: “There was genuine excitement when Zayn released his last solo album because he was the first 1D member to do so. “But interest has waned in the past two and a half years and that’s reflected in sales. “Zayn hasn’t toured at all and has done no promo for this album, apart from one … [Read more...] about Zayn Malik’s new solo album Icarus Falls flops after reaching No64 in the charts

Zayn Malik’s Icarus Falls shows the sad, strange aftermath of One Direction
Zayn Malik was never the celebrity you thought he was. If it wasn’t already obvious from his detached, often melancholic interviews in the wake of his 2015 departure from One Direction, it will be from the title of his second solo album. The very elongated 27-track Icarus Falls is comprised of more of the sparse R&B that Malik has perfected since his first release Mind of Mine in 2016, but like its titular myth is also indebted to themes of incredible ascent and crushing decline. A decline not of Malik’s career, it should be said, but rather of his own mental health, the album serving as both an intimate meditation on Malik’s life so far and a dire warning about the trauma of instant fame. It... After slaying the 1D minotaur, Zayn Malik wanders around a labyrinth of murky R&B sounds on Icarus Falls – review
“Call me Icarus,” croons 25-year-old Zayn Malik, halfway through his sprawling 27 track second solo album, Icarus Falls. “I guess I flew too close to the sun / Myth’ll call me legend, that might be why / In my Yves Saint Laurent / Got the bees comin’ in for the honey I supply… I’m in the right place at the right time.” It’s an odd choice of alter ego. Though Malik was always the sulkiest member of One Direction, the playful Icarus was Daedalus’s “smiling boy”. Icarus flew towards the light, while Malik winces away from publicity and stopped touring. And while poor, young Icarus’s overreaching ambition saw him crash and burn, Malik has enjoyed the most successful solo career of any of the 1D graduates. Well, “enjoyed” might be the wrong word for the Bradford-born perma-pouter. But his moody album Mind of Mine (2015), The Weeknd-indebted R&B solo debut, shifted a … [Read more...] about After slaying the 1D minotaur, Zayn Malik wanders around a labyrinth of murky R&B sounds on Icarus Falls – review

Icarus director raises red flag over New Zealand Government funding sporting bodies
The man behind the Oscar winning documentary that uncovered state sponsored doping in Russia is in New Zealand with a warning for Kiwi sport. Icarus director Bryan Fogel is speaking in Wellington about his involvement in one of biggest scandals in sporting history. Fogel's addressing a large gathering of athletes and sports bodies after being brought here by New Zealand Rugby and Crimestoppers. Icarus blew open the biggest sporting scandal of modern times. Now Fogel wants to ensure the same will never be said of New Zealand athletes. "Even though an athlete or an organisation or Government might be claiming that something is true or that they aren't cheating, that doesn't necessarily make it true," Fogel told Newshub. That exact approach helped Fogel uncover state sponsored doping in Russia. Drug Free Sport New Zealand is funded by the New Zealand Government - a real red flag for Fogel. "Any time that a national or Government body is policing international sport, there's a conflict of … [Read more...] about Icarus director raises red flag over New Zealand Government funding sporting bodies
