Of more than 1,000 prospective buyers surveyed in the April-June quarter, a narrow majority - 52pc - said they still plan to make their next car a diesel, the fuel that powers three out of every four vehicles on Irish roads. But around a quarter intend to go green, by buying either a hybrid (17pc) or fully electric vehicle (9pc). This is reflected in strong sales growth for 191-plated electric and hybrid cars, the report found, with electric car sales through June totalling 1,954 units - more than for the whole of 2018. The Hyundai Kona accounted for 37pc of all electric sales, the Nissan Leaf 33pc, and a trio of competitors - the Volkswagen e-Golf, the Renault Zoe and BMW i3 - split the rest. Toyota dominates Irish sales of new hybrids, producing the four most popular makes, led by the Corolla. "With the Government target of 2030 as the year that 100pc of all cars on Irish roads will be electric, the data in this report highlights that consumers already are making the switch," said … [Read more...] about Diesel remains in pole position but more drivers eye green cars
HYUNDAI has enjoyed meteoric growth in the past decade and is now firmly established as one of the top 10 car brands in the United Kingdom. Last year, the South Korean giant sold almost 90,000 cars here, achieving its highest ever market share. More than 27,000 of those were Tucsons and the family-friendly mid-sized SUV has become the brand’s No1 UK model. A makeover in the middle of last year helped to maintain that status, with cosmetic changes to the front and rear ends as well as upgrades to interior materials and equipment freshening things up nicely and ensuring the current version feels modern and well-equipped. A revised engine line-up features a couple of petrol and diesel options as well as a mild-hybrid diesel system. Our car, though, was powered by the more traditional 1.6-litre turbocharged T-GDi petrol unit, kicking out a maximum 177PS, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. This combination is not able to match the fuel economy of the diesels, claiming an … [Read more...] about The Tucson SUV’s a real high point for Hyundai
Ford Kuga THE continued success of Ford’s Kuga in the upper reaches of the sales charts is perhaps more of a reflection of just how strongly the rising tide of SUV demand is lifting all comers than it is of any particular superiority on its part. According to registration figures from industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the Kuga was the single most popular model in Northern Ireland during last month. It pipped the Hyundai Tucson - another family SUV fixture at the top of the tables - to number one, and left other, fresher, rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Volkswagen Tiguan and Kia Sportage trailing in its wake. It’s a similar picture in the year-to-date figures. SMMT data shows that the Kuga is the third most popular new car of 2019 in Northern Ireland - a highly respectable performance considering the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Fiesta are in first and second place respectively. Nor is Northern Ireland an outlier when it comes to the Kuga’s … [Read more...] about Ford popular
A new and improved Dacia Duster arrived in showrooms late last year but still with a price tag of less than €18,000. Outside, it's more muscular; inside, the dashboard and interior have been totally revised. It's still a little dull and plasticky but there is plenty of space to fit four tall adults - or five at a push - and storage is generous. On the road it's not thrilling to drive but it is noticeably more comfortable and refined. The Duster is still a functional, comfortable and a rugged-looking SUV that costs thousands less than its big-money rivals. Engine Range: 1.6 petrol; 1.5 diesel CO2 Emissions: 142-178g/km Price Range: €17,390 - €24,750 Trim Levels: Essential, Comfort, Prestige EuroNCAP rating: HHH (2017) Ford KugaFord has recently tweaked the Kuga to keep it competitive against newer rivals.
