I’M often asked what is the best family car. The answer is an estate of course, any estate, but they are not part of today’s uniform. Everyone wants an SUV. So, even if I said “Skoda Octavia estate”, the reply would be, “But what about a Range Rover Evoque? In black”. OK, I give in. So let’s talk SUVs. Three of the big sellers - Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson - are renewed this year. And, as you’d expect, all three will be throughly modern hybrids, stuffed with screens, and more expensive than the car they replace. First up, we have the Tucson, which I’ve been testing all this week.First impressions: Excellent. It comes pre-dented. So you don’t have to be precious about it at Tesco. It has more door creases than a shirt in a Sherpa’s backpack. Maybe I’m being a little bit mean because, to be fair, this all-new Tucson is much more interesting than the bland budget models the Koreans churned out in … [Read more...] about Hyundai has reinvented the Tucson with a new look and hybrid engines

Hyundai unveils Transformer-like ‘walking car’ with retractable legs to climb over obstacles or cruise in all-wheel drive in remote areas of the world and one day Mars
Hyundai has unveiled a Transformer-like 'walking car' that can access remote areas of the world and one day Mars. Called TIGER, the autonomous vehicle is not for carrying passengers, but is designed for scientific exploration or as an assistant during natural disasters to deliver food and medicine. Unlike other emergency vehicles, Hyundai's concept is capable of extending its four legs to climb over obstacles and then retract to transform into an all-wheel drive vehicle. 'These capabilities make the concept vehicle ideal for 360-degree surface evaluation, in areas struck by natural disaster, while tackling challenging terrain, or even exploring the surface of another moon or planet,' Hyundai shared. Hyundai has unveiled a Transformer-like 'walking car' that can access remote areas of the world and one day Mars TIGER, which stands for 'Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot,' is an update to Hyundai's 2019 'Elevate' concept that also features four legs, but … [Read more...] about Hyundai unveils Transformer-like ‘walking car’ with retractable legs to climb over obstacles or cruise in all-wheel drive in remote areas of the world and one day Mars
Hyundai’s amazing Ioniq 5 can recharge another electric car anywhere
WE all do it. We all try to outsmart our cars. If the satnav says we will arrive at 12:53, we have to beat it. If the tyre-pressure warning light flashes up, we’ll keep going until the wheels are square. If we have 40 miles of fuel and we’re 50 miles from home, we’ll slow to 50mph and risk it. Sometimes we make it. Sometimes we won’t. It’s like a game. But what happens when we are all running about in battery-powered cars and run out of electrons? We can’t ask a friend to fetch a green plastic can. Hyundai has the solution: An electric car that can recharge another electric car at the side of the road, in a field, anywhere. A mobile power bank, if you like. It’s called Ioniq 5 and it also has a 220v socket under the rear seats to juice up pretty much everything else — laptops, e-scooters, even a microwave or mini fridge when you go camping. Chelsea players used it to power football launchers. The video is out tomorrow. There’s something else about this car that … [Read more...] about Hyundai’s amazing Ioniq 5 can recharge another electric car anywhere
Hyundai’s Kona Electric car is Which?’s product of the year beating Apple’s Airpod and a reusable coffee cup
THE Hyundai Kona Electric car is the Which? product of the year. The motor beat items such as the Apple AirPod and a reusable coffee cup. Researchers whittled down the best products from 3,500 launches based on performance, innovation or value. The Hyundai Kona Electric was named No1 after judges decided it makes one of the strongest cases yet for people to make the switch to emissions free driving. They were wowed by its driving range, with the car managing to clock 233 miles on a full charge. That was only 31 miles short of a Tesla Model 3, according to their tests, although that costs about £7,000 more. Which? editor Harry Rose said: “The Kona Electric isn’t just an excellent and affordable electric vehicle, it’s an excellent car full stop. That’s what makes it both a game-changer and our pick as the product of 2019.” Apple and Sony both took two spots in the top ten. Sony’s cheap SRS-XB01 portable bluetooth speaker and premium WH-1000XM3 over-ear headphones … [Read more...] about Hyundai’s Kona Electric car is Which?’s product of the year beating Apple’s Airpod and a reusable coffee cup
Hyundai invents rolling super-robot that carries cargo ‘in world’s most inhospitable places’
ENGINEERS have unveiled an unmanned robotic vehicle which can travel on wheels or as a four-legged WALKING machine in the world’s most inhospitable locations. The ‘Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot, or TIGER, has been designed by Hyundai Motor Group to carry cargo over challenging terrain. Dubbed the first uncrewed ultimate mobility vehicle (UMV), the concept features a sophisticated leg and wheel locomotion system, 360-degree directional control, and a range of sensors for remote observation. The high-tech machine will also be able to connect to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which can fully charge and deliver it to inaccessible locations. TIGER is being developed by Hyundai Motor Group’s New Horizons Studio, headquartered in Mountain View, California. Dr. John Suh, Head of New Horizons Studio, said: “Vehicles like TIGER, and the technologies underpinning it, give us an opportunity to push our imaginations. “We are constantly looking at ways to … [Read more...] about Hyundai invents rolling super-robot that carries cargo ‘in world’s most inhospitable places’
