Cells infected with Covid can ‘explode’: Landmark discovery could lead to radical new ways to tackle virus
Some cells infected with Covid seem to 'explode', scientists have discovered, which may help them create radical new treatments to tackle the virus. The reaction, a cell death known as pyroptosis which is linked to inflammation, is thought to occur in roughly eight out of ten patients hospitalised with Covid, and may explain how the virus can cause such serious damage to lungs and other organs. Researchers found that when the immune system tries to expel the virus, it can release dangerous particles into the bloodstream which can trigger inflammation in vulnerable parts of the body. A similar phenomenon called a cytokine storm – when the immune system releases too many infection-fighting proteins called cytokines which then attack healthy tissue – has long been known to cause severe damage in response to Covid infection, often leading to multiple organ failure. Some cells infected with Covid seem to 'explode', scientists have discovered, which may help them create … [Read more...] about Cells infected with Covid can ‘explode’: Landmark discovery could lead to radical new ways to tackle virus
Eurovision 2022: Sam Ryder wants to actually go to space after doing UK proud with epic Space Man performance
Sam Ryder is preparing for take-off – literally – after being hailed a ‘hero’ for his out-of-this-world performance at Eurovision. In an exclusive interview with Guilty Pleasures, Sam, whose planet-sized anthem Space Man nabbed the UK’s best result in two decades , revealed he is keen to blast into the great unknown. ‘A hundred per cent. Yes. Absolutely,’ he beamed. ‘I was hanging out with real astronaut in the Netherlands called Andre. He’s basically the equivalent of our Brian Cox, if Brian was also an astronaut.’ ‘He was talking me through all of his experiences with going up into space. Since I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut, which was the inspiration for the song.’ Remember Sam… in space, no one can hear you sing. Closer to home, the TikTok sensation, from Maldon in Essex, would love to clock up a collaboration with Sia, an early supporter of his singing videos. ‘I have a good feeling it could happen… She played a big part in the beginning of all of … [Read more...] about Eurovision 2022: Sam Ryder wants to actually go to space after doing UK proud with epic Space Man performance
Sam Ryder’s ‘Space Man’ may finally provide the UK a winning shot at Eurovision
On the day that US heavy metal giants Linkin Park headlined 2011’s Download festival at the Donington racetrack in Leicestershire, an obscure band called The Morning After were peddling their wares to a select crowd on one of the festival’s outer stages. Anyone who happened to be at the Jägermeister Stage on that wet Sunday afternoon can today proudly boast that they were there first: The Morning After’s singer, Sam Ryder, has been confirmed as the UK’s entry to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, with his song Space Man. Ryder has already come a long way from hair metal obscurity. In 2020, the 31-year-old became the UK’s most popular artist on video sharing platform TikTok due to his home-recorded cover versions of songs by Britney Spears, Adele and Michael Jackson. Thanks to his elastic vocals and charismatic performing style, he has amassed 12 million followers on the social media site. But Eurovision – which takes place in Turin in May – will thrust Ryder into the mainstream … [Read more...] about Sam Ryder’s ‘Space Man’ may finally provide the UK a winning shot at Eurovision
Woman finds hilarious painting that resembles her cat: “What a find”
The world of art is ever-changing. With some people spurning classic pieces for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) , and others opting for purposefully bad tattoos that have delighted thousands, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the traditional painting was out of favor. But one woman's unusual painting find has proved there is still space for traditional art. Allie, who uses the Reddit handle Prestigious-Theory-4, shared her discovery on Reddit on Thursday. Allie is currently in college in Potsdam, New York, and found the painting while moving things into storage for the summer. It caught her eye because of the striking resemblance to her own black cat Jasper who will be two years old in October. "It was left in the middle of the ground, not near any particular unit," she told Newsweek : "After seeing it multiple times after multiple trips, I noticed it's similar to popular artist Vanessa Stockard, whom I'm a fan of. Though I'm certain this is a recreation of one of her … [Read more...] about Woman finds hilarious painting that resembles her cat: “What a find”
Anyone home? ‘Doorway’ on Mars spawns alien conspiracy theories
At first glance, it looks as if a doorway has been carefully carved into a rock face on Mars . The grainy image, taken by the mast-mounted camera on Nasa’s Curiosity rover on May 7 this year, appears to show an opening with an arched lintel leading to a passageway with smooth walls. Conspiracy theorists have seized upon the snap as evidence for life on the Red Planet , but scientists were quick to point out that the surrounding geology gives a clear picture of how the formation arose - and unsurprisingly it does not require Martian architects. A large fissure to the left of the doorway demonstrates rock-cracking events frequently occur in the region, while a boulder in the foreground appears to have fallen from the opening. Sanjeev Gupta, a professor of earth science at Imperial College London, one of the scientists of Nasa's Curiosity rover mission, said the hole was formed through “normal geological processes”. “The boulder likely just got eroded off a hillslope and … [Read more...] about Anyone home? ‘Doorway’ on Mars spawns alien conspiracy theories

Inside UFO secrets that could be revealed at bombshell hearing probing whether aliens pose national security threat
CONCERNS that UFOs have never-before-seen capabilities that can outmaneuver and outperform the US's most advanced military technology prompted Congress to call a historic UFO hearing. Congressman Andre Carson, who will head the May 17 public hearing, promised to dive into the national security risks posed by UFOs' potential presence. "Americans need to know more about these unexplained occurrences," Carson said in a tweet. This is the first time Congress will get together in more than 50 years to discuss UFOs and extraterrestrial life, which expert Jeremy Corbell said is a "big f******g deal." "This is what the people and #UFOTwitter have been asking for: uniform transparency," Corbell told The Sun in an exclusive interview. "This hearing will kick in the doors and is more proof that UFOs are real and prove that they have advanced tech that we cannot identify. Wednesday morning news briefing: UK’s retort to EU trade war threat
Liz Truss has insisted that the UK "will not shy away" from taking action on the Northern Ireland Protocol. The Foreign Secretary last night told Brussels its proposed solutions would make the situation worse after EU leaders threatened a trade war . She is preparing to announce that the UK will unilaterally change parts of the protocol – which defines post-Brexit trading terms between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland – as early as next week. Ministers are expected to point to the impasse over power-sharing in Northern Ireland in the wake of last week's elections as proof that the protocol is unsustainable. There were warnings from the Continent about potential economic consequences if the UK reneges on promises it made in the 2019 Brexit withdrawal agreement. But, as political editor Ben Riley-Smith reports, Ms Truss issued a retort . Meanwhile, Boris Johnson used yesterday's Queen's Speech to say that helping families with the cost of living crunch and … [Read more...] about Wednesday morning news briefing: UK’s retort to EU trade war threat
