ČTK | 30 July 2018 Prague, July 27 (CTK) - Former Czech regional governor and ex-minister David Rath, who was sent to prison for corruption, wants to run for senator in the Litomerice ward, north Bohemia, saying he knows the locality well as he spent a long time in custody there, daily Lidove noviny (LN) reported on Friday. Rath, Social Democrat (CSSD) lawmaker (2006-2012), Central Bohemia governor (2008-2012) and health minister (2005-2006), was in June again sentenced to 8.5 in prison for corruption connected with public contracts in the region he headed, which was the same sentence that was imposed on him three years ago. The Prague Regional Court also ordered the forfeiture of some 22 million crowns, which the police seized from him. Rath, who pleads innocent, appealed the verdict. LN writes that Rath is now considering running in the autumn election to one-third of the Senate, the upper house of parliament, most likely for the Bloc of Jana Bobosikova, a former MEP. LN: Kula’s firm to guard Prague Castle, he runs for SPD senator
ČTK | 23 July 2018 Prague, July 20 (CTK) - The premises of the Prague Castle, which includes the presidential seat, will be guarded by a firm of General Ludek Kula, who plans to run for senator for the anti-EU Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) movement in the autumn, for four years, daily Lidove noviny (LN) wrote on Friday. The Prague Castle Administration and the Indus firm signed the contract worth 16 million crowns in June. The majority owner of Indus is the Lenia company that offers security systems and cooperates with the Moneta and Ceska sporitelna banks, T-Mobile mobile services operator and several ministries, the paper writes. But Moneta Money Bank spokesman Jakub Svestka told CTK that the bank stopped cooperating with Lenia in 2013. LN writes that one of Lenia's owners was businessman Jiri Kubin. Kubin was shot dead in Prague in 2006 and was allegedly close to the late underworld boss Frantisek Mrazek, also shot dead in 2006. LN: Czechs increasingly marrying foreigners
ČTK | 16 July 2018 Prague, July 13 (CTK) - The number of the marriages between Czechs and foreigners rose by almost 20 percent since 2010, daily Lidove noviny (LN) wrote on Friday. According to the latest data of the Czech Statistical Office (CSU), the marriages were concluded by 4,760 such couples. Czech women were mainly marrying German, Slovak and British men, while Czech men mostly married Slovak, Ukrainian and Russian women. However, the latter often face problems due to their decision, LN writes, citing the example of a Ukrainian woman, aged 22. Since Ukraine is one of the "third countries," its citizens must gain the right to stay. "This is neither citizenship nor permanent stay. There is the vital document, a blue book called the Stay Card of a Family Member of an EU Citizen," the woman told the paper. The Interior Ministry says everyone who wants to stay over 90 days in the Czech Republic must have it. Due to the document, newly married people must undergo quite … [Read more...] about LN: Czechs increasingly marrying foreigners
LN: Cardinal Duka files lawsuit over theatre performances
ČTK | 13 July 2018 Prague, July 12 (CTK) - Cardinal Dominik Duka, primate of the Czech Catholic Church, has filed a lawsuit over the controversial theatre performances of Our Violence and Your Violence, in which Jesus rapes a Muslim woman, and The Curse, staining Pope John Paul II, Lidove noviny (LN) wrote on Thursday. Both performances, written and directed by Bosnian-Croat Oliver Frljic, were staged during the Theatre World 2018 international festival held in Brno in May. Apart from the shocking scene with Jesus, which stirred up protests directly during the performance, an actress pulls out a Czech flag from her vagina on the stage in Our Violence and Your Violence, while The Curse starts with a statue of the late Pope of Polish origin John Paul II with an erect penis and at its end, an actress is cutting a cross with a power saw. Archbishop Duka says both plays have sharply infringed his rights guaranteed by the Charter of the Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. LN: Czechs help Ethiopians run business with superfood moringa
ČTK | 10 July 2018 Prague, July 9 (CTK) - Two Czech enthusiasts, project manager Jaromir Novak and botanist Petr Nemec from Brno, with the aid of the Foreign Ministry, help Ethiopians run business with superfood moringa, daily Lidove noviny (LN) wrote on Monday. The moringa oleifera plant does not need any special care, it grows quickly and can be harvested a few times a year. Ground leaves of this permanently green tree, sold in the form of pressed tablets, have become a hit among healthy food as they contain a high amount of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and proteins, while the moringa oil, pressed from its seeds, is broadly used in cosmetics. However, in the fertile southern Ethiopia, where moringa is traditionally grown, this "exotic dietary supplement" is used for other purposes. Its leaves are sold at market places and further used as cabbage, or they are dried and ground to flour. In any case, moringa remains an underestimated local product and Ethiopians would … [Read more...] about LN: Czechs help Ethiopians run business with superfood moringa
