Ribena is to stop using plastic straws - saving an estimated 16 tonnes of plastic from being produced every year. While cartons of the blackcurrant drink will soon be sipped through a paper tube instead, the wrappers for the new implement will still be plastic. It comes ahead of a government ban on plastic on-pack straws attached to cartons coming into force in July. Ribena's owner, Suntory Beverage and Food GB&I (SBF GB&I), is eyeing a target of having 100% sustainable packaging by 2030. The decision to stop using plastic straws follows a trial of cartons with paper alternatives at Tesco stores, and Ribena has worked to strengthen the drinking tool for a wider rollout. Advertisement The refreshed product will start to be seen on more shelves by the end of this month, and across the board by April. Jo Padwick, transformation manager at SBF GB&I, said: "It is great to see our years of hard work getting such positive reviews from Ribena … [Read more...] about Ribena switching to paper straws on its cartons – saving 16 tonnes of plastic each year

TFL staff behind moving and inspiring board messages reveal new book has saved lives
The faces behind the famous messages left on TFL boards at different London Underground stations have spoken about going viral, with their messages now featuring in a brand new book. Stamp duty holiday to be extended to the end of June saving movers up to £15k in tax in £1bn budget giveaway
RISHI Sunak is preparing to extend the stamp duty holiday by three months until the end of June. The Chancellor is set to delay the cut off point for buyers to save thousands on purchasing homes with the move. The Treasury announced last year that it would temporarily raise the stamp duty threshold from £125,000 to £500,000 for property sales in England and Northern Ireland. But many people have been left scrambling to complete their transactions before the deadline of March 31, worried that if they do not, they could be left with a £15,000 tax bill. The deadline will now likely roll on until the summer. The Times reported that Mr Sunak - who has been urged not to end the stamp duty holiday - will use his Budget next week to move the deadline to the end of June. Extending the stamp duty holiday could cost the Treasury around £1 billion, according to The Times. It will go alongside moves to extend furlough and other support measures such as the VAT cut … [Read more...] about Stamp duty holiday to be extended to the end of June saving movers up to £15k in tax in £1bn budget giveaway
I’m a tough cookie and put on a brave face but I’ve been depressed and struggled to cope, says Alex Scott
From the outside I’m sure most of you know me as that smiley woman from the TV. And largely, I am. I love socialising, I love meeting new people and I love my work. I love to laugh. That’s me . But there are still days where I feel low. These low days look different for everyone – I personally go quiet, inwards, shut myself off. I’ve been really open about how I see a therapist, and how that was such a positive change in my life. That said, it was only through my recent BBC documentary, The Truth About Improving Your Mental Health that I was told I was depressed. Looking at my daily life, many would wonder how I could be ‘depressed’. But mental illness doesn’t work like that. It’s so easy to think there are people worse off than us and we have no right to feel sorry for ourselves. But that thought process alone can be really dangerous, and lead to bigger problems. Mental illness can strike anyone at any time - no matter your age, gender or race. It doesn’t … [Read more...] about I’m a tough cookie and put on a brave face but I’ve been depressed and struggled to cope, says Alex Scott
Covid vaccines available in GP surgeries TODAY – all you need to know about getting yours
COVID vaccines will be available from GP surgeries from today - as the race to protect Brits from the virus is ramped up. The Oxford/AstraZeneca jab can be stored at fridge temperatures making it easier to administer, unlike the Pfizer jab which requires storage at -70C. It's hoped more than 700 GP surgeries will be delivering vaccines by the end of the week - after the UK recorded the highest daily death toll since April. The UK reported a further 1,041 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday. Record numbers are also currently in hospital with coronavirus, with a further 3,500 admitted in England on Monday. Some 1.3 million people have already received either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Oxford/AstraZeneca jab. And millions of extra Covid vaccines could be ready within weeks as approval times for fresh batches are slashed to just five days. The jabs will be given to those deemed most vulnerable to the virus first - and are … [Read more...] about Covid vaccines available in GP surgeries TODAY – all you need to know about getting yours
