Stories around the forecast of snow are plentiful but often bear no fruit. If we report as storm is coming, there is almost definitely a storm coming, but when it comes to snow, we (and many other publications) are often left looking silly and worse yet, not particularly trustworthy. That's not the intention though. The truth is that snow is much more temperamental than any other type of weather and as a result it's much harder to predict. The Met Office admit that forecasting snow "will always be a challenge" in the UK. Wales Online reports how meteorologist and Channel 4 weather presenter Liam Dutton explains all in a post on his blog . "The bottom line is that you should never believe a detailed UK snow forecast more than three days ahead," he says. "Predicting snow in the UK is difficult and weather computer models rarely get it right more than a few days ahead. In some cases, they still get it wrong the day before it happens!" Liam points to several conditions, often seemingly … [Read more...] about Why is snow so hard to predict for weather forecasters?

ONE of the best meteor showers of the year is about to get under way - and stargazers can't wait. Up to 120 shooting stars every hour will streak brightly across the sky at the peak of the Geminids shower. Here's how to watch. When does the Geminids meteor shower start? The Geminids meteor shower hits the Earth at the same time every year, beginning around December 4. In 2018 the peak - and therefore the best time to watch - will be on the night of December 13-14. Nasa says it is one of the best and most reliable displays of shooting stars in the astronomical year. Meteors are very bright with trails that last long enough for a clear view. And they occur often, up to two a minute in the best conditions away from light pollution. The peak lasts for about 24 hours, giving everyone a chance to watch wherever they are on the planet. Flashes appear to come from the constellation Gemini, hence the name, but in fact have nothing to do with those stars which are many light years away. They are … [Read more...] about How to watch the Geminids meteor shower tonight in the UK and what time will they appear?
The Met Office is warning we're in for another wet and wild night as Storm Bronagh brings gale force winds and torrential rain to parts of the UK. And respected weather watchers South West Storm Chasers are warning people to keep away from coastal areas, hills and cliffs. The latest storm to roll in of the Atlantic has now officially been named Storm Bronagh, and she comes hot on the heels of Storm Ali and tropical Storm Helene - with more storms expected at the weekend. She is expected to be at her worst in Devon and Cornwall between 9pm and 11pm this evening. The Met Office is now warning violent gusts of up to 65mph are possible in parts of the UK - which is at the lower end of Storm Force 11 on the Beaufort Scale. The Beaufort Scale scale warns Violent Storm Force 11 winds measure between 64mph 72mph - and winds of this speed are very rarely experienced and can cause widespread damage. Fortunately, the highest wind speeds are expected to hit further east in the UK - but Devon and … [Read more...] about When will Storm Bronagh hit the Uk and how bad will the weather get?

Back in 1998, I hosted one for parents of prep school kids at St Albans’ St Columba’s College. What began as a plan to get a few friends round turned into something of an event as more and more of the 4x4 drivers that lined King Harry Lane every morning said yes. Add to that the fact that all the neighbours we’d casually mentioned it to were up for it as well … [Read more...] about Football’s coming home: How to host the ultimate World Cup party
Don't pack that barbecue away just yet folks - we're in for a lot more sunshine this week in Derby. Forecasters are predicting a full day of unbroken sunshine in the city today as temperatures hit 19C. But tomorrow it'll be even warmer with highs of 20C predicted as the Midlands enjoys some of the best weather in the country. Katie Greening, forecaster of The Weather Channel said temperatures will spike slightly above average on Tuesday as high pressure reaches the UK. “The warmest day will be Tuesday, with highs peaking at 19C in London," she said. "The higher temperatures will be as a result of the flow of warmer air from the south ahead of low pressure. "In its wake temperatures will lower in the following northerly to north-westerly wind.” Temperatures are set to dip later in the week before rising again towards the end of the month, although there will be some showers around as well. This is due to a high pressure extending from Scandinavia to the British Isles, … [Read more...] about How warm is the weather in Derby this week? The daily forecast
