Passenger lands plane at Humberside Airport after pilot falls ill
Published 8 October 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A passenger has landed an aeroplane at Humberside Airport after the pilot fell ill at the controls. Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the airport after the pilot collapsed and a distress call was made from the light aircraft. Two flying instructors were called in to advise the passenger how to bring the plane down. One of them, Roy Murray, said the passenger had no flying experience and did a "remarkable job". The passenger and pilot were the only people on board the aircraft, which took off from Sandtoft Airfield 25 miles (40km) away. 'Control room cheers' Mr Murray, who works at a flying school based at the airport, said: "He made quite a good landing, actually. "He didn't know the layout of the aeroplane, he didn't have lights on so he was absolutely flying blind as well. "I … [Read more...] about Passenger lands plane at Humberside Airport after pilot falls ill
Untrained passenger lands Florida plane after pilot falls ill
Published 3 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A passenger with no flying experience landed a plane in Florida after the pilot passed out. In a audio recording from the flight, the passenger, Darren Harrison, can be heard telling air traffic control a "serious situation" was unfolding. An air traffic controller - who also teaches new pilots - helped guide the man down to Palm Beach International Airport just after noon on Tuesday. The two later met on the tarmac for a hug. The pilot of the Cessna 208 had been flying to Florida from the Bahamas when he told his two passengers he wasn't feeling well, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He fell against the controls, putting the small aircraft into a nosedive and a sharp turn. The nature of the medical emergency has not been revealed, but the pilot is being treated in hospital. Man to face charge of killing mother at sea for inheritance
A 28-year-old man who was rescued from a raft off the coast of New England in 2016 after his boat sank awaited arraignment Wednesday on charges he killed his mother at sea to inherit the family’s estate. Nathan Carman was expected to be arraigned in federal court in Rutland on multiple fraud charges and a first-degree murder charge in the death of Linda Carman. He shouted “Not guilty!” in the direction of reporters as he approached the courtroom. Authorities allege in the indictment unsealed Tuesday that Carman also killed his grandfather, John Chakalos, at his home in Windsor, Connecticut , in 2013 as part of a scheme to obtain money and property from his grandfather’s estate, but he was not charged with that killing. “As a central part of the scheme, Nathan Carman murdered John Chakalos and Linda Carman,” the indictment reads. Carman was found in an inflatable raft eight days after leaving a Rhode Island marina to go fishing with his mother, who was never … [Read more...] about Man to face charge of killing mother at sea for inheritance

Movement, positioning, and cunning: The secrets behind Jamie Vardy’s incredible efficiency
Strikers are generally considered to be at their peak between the ages of 25 to 29 but Jamie Vardy - who didn't even make his Premier League debut until he was 27 - appears to be getting even better at 33, attacking games with the doggedness of a man making up for lost time spent in the lower leagues. Still ridiculously quick, Vardy has been a ferocious prospect for opposition managers - and defenders - to contend with since his breakout 2015-16 season, becoming an elite level footballer despite barely touching the ball. Vardy's most recent performance was his star turn in Leicester’s 5-2 win over Manchester City, scoring three goals with 21 touches - the fewest of any outfield player to have started the match. So, how does he do it? Vardy the killer "I was watching the runs he made and I was thinking he used to make 100 runs per game and maybe get it twice," said Gary Neville, while commentating on Leicester's win over City. "Now he makes 10 runs per game and maybe gets it … [Read more...] about Movement, positioning, and cunning: The secrets behind Jamie Vardy’s incredible efficiency

Ronnie Coulter convicted of 1998 Chhokar murder after second trial
Published 5 October 2016 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A man has been convicted of the 1998 murder of Surjit Singh Chhokar after being tried for a second time. Ronnie Coulter, 48, from Wishaw, was originally cleared of stabbing the 32-year-old in Overtown, North Lanarkshire, following a trial in 1999. The Crown was given permission to bring a second prosecution following changes to Scotland's double jeopardy laws. Coulter was convicted at the second trial at the High Court in Glasgow. He now faces a mandatory life term. His conviction is only the second time in Scottish legal history that an accused has been tried twice for the same crime. I Went to Disney World
Earlier this month, Walt Disney World began reopening, following almost four months of closure due to the pandemic. I flew to Orlando to experience the magic. The week I arrived, Florida had registered the highest single-day case count of any state thus far. In Orlando’s airport, I felt a vague sense that Floridians considered such statistics a source of secret pride, as if they had set a record for fattest alligator or ugliest serial killer or most senior citizens in a golf cart. The airport where I had started my day, in Connecticut, had required masks, and everyone wore them. Here in Florida, some passengers went totally unmasked, but most wore masks in a defiant fashion, either slung under their chin or with their nostrils gaping out over the top, sucking and spewing potentially viral particles with every breath. A friend who lives a couple of hours away in St. Petersburg likens this latter style to “wearing a condom that covers only the shaft.” Disney World is in Florida only … [Read more...] about I Went to Disney World
