Full Monty star Hugo Speer denies inappropriate conduct allegations after being sacked from reboot
The Full Monty star Hugo Speer has denied all claims against him after he was fired from the upcoming reboot of the iconic film. Speers, who played Guy in the feel-good 90’s classic , was fired by Disney Plus after allegations of inappropriate conduct emerged about the actor. Details of the allegations have not been made public, however the streaming platform confirmed to Deadline that an ‘investigation was launched’ into the claims. When the investigation was completed, Disney Plus went on to say, ‘the decision was made to terminate his contract with immediate effect.’ Speer’s spokesperson, Simon Brewer, has since released a statement to ET on his behalf, writing: ‘Hugo denies all the allegations and is challenging all of them.’ The 53-year-old was due to reprise the role of Guy 25 years on from the release of the original film, which followed a group of unemployed men in Sheffield who form a striptease act. Other cast members returning include Robert … [Read more...] about Full Monty star Hugo Speer denies inappropriate conduct allegations after being sacked from reboot
Michael Gove ‘tells Boris to go’ after 38 resignations in 24 hours
Michael Gove has told Boris Johnson to step down as prime minister, a bombshell report has claimed. The Levelling Up Secretary is one of the most senior members of Mr Johnson’s Cabinet, but was nowhere to be seen as the PM took a battering during PMQs. According to Mail Plus , it was because he had just told him to resign during a meeting earlier this morning. A spokesman for Mr Gove did not dispute this. Mr Gove famously torpedoed Mr Johnson’s first leadership bid in 2016, before agreeing to join his Cabinet in 2019. The explosive report comes hot on the heels of six ministers resigning in one fell swoop . It’s hard to see how the PM can survive the collapse of his Government, but he told MPs today he would not resign. Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid got the ball rolling last night when they dramatically stepped down over the Chris Pincher affair. Almost 30 ministers have now resigned within 24 hours. Who has resigned from … [Read more...] about Michael Gove ‘tells Boris to go’ after 38 resignations in 24 hours
When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
“D uck and cover!” a mechanized voice screamed. The ground shook and the window rattled. I rolled from my bed to the floor of my trailer and felt for the armor I’d forgotten in my office. I lay there and sweated and swore. The voice from the loudspeaker urged me to get away from the windows. I was inside a tin can. I crawled to the door. My hand was on the knob when I realized I was naked. The next impact knocked the air conditioner to the floor. I grabbed a light-blue cotton robe and bolted. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. I raced along a row of sandbags, one hand holding the robe closed. The duck-and-cover bunkers were 100 feet away. Another series of explosions, and I hit the rocks. I was lying there, panting, when I saw a bright-yellow bunker tucked behind a row of sandbags and palm trees. I was up, running, full out. My robe fell open and flew out behind me. Another hit. I was 20 feet away. Ten. Five. I crashed into the … [Read more...] about What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
From red lines to white smoke: The inside story of 12 hours when Theresa May secured a Brexit deal
Just before 5.30 on Thursday afternoon, Donald Tusk decided it was time to crack the whip on Theresa May’s talks with Belfast and Dublin. The European Council president announced he would be making a statement about Brexit at the unusually early time of 6.50am GMT on Friday, much to the surprise of those who were around the negotiating table. It certainly had the desired effect. By around 7am yesterday, Theresa May was in Brussels, the deal done. “At the time we made the announcement we did not know there was going to be a deal,” admitted a source close to Mr Tusk. “It was to add a bit of pressure but also an honest attempt to say where we were." What followed was an extraordinary night of frantic phone calls, horse-trading and insomnia that knocked heads together and took Theresa May into the promised land of trade talks. Mrs May had taken personal charge of the process after being told the EU’s deadline could not slip any further for “sufficient progress” to be agreed next … [Read more...] about From red lines to white smoke: The inside story of 12 hours when Theresa May secured a Brexit deal

Hunting for Antibiotics in the World’s Dirtiest Places
On a chilly autumn morning in northwest London, just outside the Euston train station, Adam Roberts stops at the top of an outdoor staircase, looks around for police, and tries to appear inconspicuous. This is harder than it sounds, and not only because he’s 6 foot 3. Roberts pulls a plastic-wrapped package from his pocket, tears it open, and slides out a long, slender tube and a swab that looks like an overgrown Q-tip. After checking again for anyone watching, he trots down the stairs, dragging the swab along the handrail, and slips the swab into the tube and the tube into his pocket. Then he strolls away. Listen to the audio version of this article: Feature stories, read aloud: download the Audm app for your iPhone. After a block, Roberts veers off busy Euston Road and down side streets toward his lab at University College London. He’s not up to anything nefarious—quite the opposite—but with closed-circuit TVs everywhere and London on high alert for terrorist threats, … [Read more...] about Hunting for Antibiotics in the World’s Dirtiest Places
