A year on from this sudden, shattering event, I consider it a good time to reflect on the turbulence – and triumph – involved in adjusting to life after unexpected loss. The journey after a loved one passes away in tragic and dramatic circumstances is characterised by contrasts. After the initial shock, attention turns quickly to planning the funeral and doing that person you knew and loved as much justice as you can. This phase is counterintuitively the easiest to process. Everything revolves congruently around the drama of your recent bereavement and it’s an opportunity to come together and reflect on the beauty of the person who will now be painfully missed. It is an … [Read more...] about A year since my sister’s suicide, here’s what I’ve learned about grief – and life
A couple hours after taking his first dose of the mind-altering drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA, Bessel Van Der Kolk lay down on a couch in the presence of two psychotherapists, put on an eyeshade, and allowed himself to sink into a quiet, hypnotic state. Van Der Kolk, one of the world's foremost experts on trauma, had agreed to ingest the potent compound, known to generations of recreational illegal drug users by its street names "Ecstasy" or "Molly," because he was the principal investigator in a rigorous 15-site, phase III, clinical trial. The object was to evaluate the effectiveness of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in patients suffering from extreme Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). As such, he'd been told, he was required to have first-hand experience with the drug. The results from those sessions are striking. Two months after participating in the study, more than two-thirds of those who took MDMA no longer had diagnosable PTSD, investigators report in an … [Read more...] about Molly, Psychedelic Drug, Shows Promise As Mental Health Treatment: Study

Ben Barnes plays the manipulative and powerful Shadow Summoner in Netflix’s Shadow and Bone series. The show is an adaptation of the trilogy of the same name written by Leigh Bardugo. The series follows Alina (Jessie Mei Li), a lonely orphan girl who discovers a unique power that thrusts her into the lavish world of the magical elite, the Grisha. Grisha is a human who practices Small Science, manipulating energy and matter. While the Grisha are not supernatural beings, they have been gifted with sacred arts. Alina is then discovered by General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), also known as the Darkling, who wants to use her ability for his own gain. Those who have seen the show would know that the Darkling is full of disdain for humanity as he has outlived many of them for hundreds of years. But deep down, he seems to develop some feelings for Alina. However, those feelings are mangled into something else as he lacks that emotional capacity. In an interview with The Collider, the … [Read more...] about Netflix ‘Shadow and Bone’: Ben Barnes sheds light on the darkling’s origin story
EXPLAINED: Together forever, the billboards proclaimed in the Red Square of Moscow. But even as Russian President Vladimir Putin signed “treaties” folding four Ukrainian territories into Russia on September 30, his soldiers were losing ground there – and Ukrainian flags were still flying. The strange theatre of Russia’s annexation of roughly 15% of Ukraine, some of which remains under Ukrainian control, has raised the stakes even higher in Putin’s grinding war. Western leaders have denounced the move as an illegal sham while the Kremlin buses in strikingly unenthusiastic Russian citizens to the Red Square to celebrate “the people’s choice”. For the first time since the days of the Cold War, officials on both sides are seriously war-gaming a nuclear escalation as more of Putin’s allies call for the use of less powerful or “low-yield” tactical nukes to drive out Ukrainian forces from lands that Russia vows it will now “defend” as its own. Meanwhile, Russia has been hit with more … [Read more...] about Russia has annexed more of Ukraine. What does that mean and what happens now?
