Doing moderate-intensity exercise every day can lower your risk of developing diabetes, a new study suggests. It's well-known that being sedentary raises the risk of health problems such as heart disease and obesity. But researchers found that doing simple activities such as brisk walking or gardening for just 30 minutes raised levels of a hormone that reduces appetite and lowers blood sugar levels. However, the results were only apparent in men, which the team says could be due to physiological differences between men and women, or the fact that women generally tended to lower activity levels. The study authors, from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, say their findings imply that even relatively short bouts of low-intensity daily physical activity may help prevent metabolic diseases like diabetes, at least in men. A new study from the University of Copenhagen found that activities such as brisk walking or gardening secreted a hormone that suppressed appetite and … [Read more...] about Just half an hour of brisk walking every day could reduce the risk of diabetes – but only in MEN, study finds

Scientists develop contraceptive pill that women only have to take once a month
Women on the pill may only have to take one a month within three to five years, according to a new study. Scientists are developing an oral contraceptive that only has to be taken once a month. Oral contraceptives are one of the most popular forms of birth control, but their effectiveness depends on being taken every day. It is estimated that about one in 11 women taking birth control pills (nine per cent) become pregnant each year. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States are now developing an oral contraceptive that only has to be taken once a month. They say it could have a "significant impact" on the health of women and their families, especially in the developing world. Study co-senior author Dr Giovanni Traverso: "Our capsule represents a major advancement toward providing women with a once-a-month contraceptive. "For many, this may be hard to believe. But our pre-clinical data is encouraging us along that road. We began our work on … [Read more...] about Scientists develop contraceptive pill that women only have to take once a month

Viagra: The profitable pill
When Pfizer launched Viagra in 1998 its share price doubled within days. Since then, the little blue pills have become a pillar of profit, earning the company more than £1bn a year. Thanks to promotional campaigns, which included appearances by the footballing legend Pele, male impotence lost some of its stigma and 25 million men requested the pills. In England alone, GPs write about 6m Viagra prescriptions a year. The drug started life in a lab in Sandwich, Kent, where it was developed to treat high blood pressure. Its transformation into a blockbuster treatment for impotence began when volunteers in a clinical trial reported a suspicious number of erections. The overnight success of Viagra prompted Pfizer to wonder if the drug had any effect in women. They raised awareness of a condition called "female sexual arousal disorder", an all-encompassing phrase for sexual dysfunction, and began clinical trials. The trials were a failure and the attempt to have Viagra licensed for the … [Read more...] about Viagra: The profitable pill

Scientists are developing a pill that could help you forget bad memories - and they have just tested it on 60 heart broken people. Dr. Alain Brunet's memory manipulation study at the McGill University in Quebec, Canada, hopes to bring about a pioneering technique for the easing of painful memories. What had previously been a science fiction fantasy, discarding unwanted memories, may become a reality for those suffering from an 'adjustment disorder' after experiencing a traumatic event.
