What will be the economic impact of COVID-19 and are there any silver linings?

March 21, 2020 by www.euronews.com

As countries close shops, borders and beg their citizens to stay at home, the global economy is looking less healthy by the day. The Dow Jones in New York closed down 4.5 per cent on Friday, capping off Wall Street's worst week since 2008. A global recession is now a real possibility; central banks worldwide have slashed interest rates to record levels. And increasingly, people are finding they have no more job to go to. Saadia Zahidi is a managing director at the World Economic Forum. She told Euronews a quick recovery depends on the actions governments and employers take today. She also said more coordination is needed, more along the lines of what happened following the financial crisis in 2008. But there could be a silver lining, she added. "I think there are quite a few people starting to predict that we might see some fairly major structural changes in the future [linked to this crisis]," she said. "So much more remote working, much less business travel … [Read more...] about What will be the economic impact of COVID-19 and are there any silver linings?

May 22, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

Covid-19 has hit the Dancing With The Stars camp with Eric Murray and Rhys Mathewson catching the virus and ruled out of the competition's semi-finals. Format rules mean the most recently eliminated competitors return to the dance competition. Kerre Woodham and Alex Vaz will be back on the dance floor. It’s semi-finals time for Dancing with the Stars. Emily Writes tries to understand what’s going on. RECAP : What a week it has been! Remember last week when we were dancing to Darude like it was 20 years ago and nobody had Covid-19, and our beloved Rhys was on the top of the leaderboard ? To paraphrase the old Titanic lady, it’s been 84 years since then. Eric was struck first by the dreaded ‘Rona. He was replaced by Vaz – righting last week’s wrong. Then it claimed our sex symbol Rhys ! Devastation! That means Kerre is back. Covid: NHS Wales planned care will slow down – health minister

March 31, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 31 March Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Coronavirus pandemic Planned treatment across the NHS in Wales is expected to slow down due to Covid, the Health Minister has warned. This could cause a further rise in the record number of people waiting for non-urgent operations like hip replacements or cataract surgery. Ms Morgan said pressure on the health service hadn't been seen on this scale since March last year. "Something has to give and at the moment it probably is planned care," she said. Rising Covid cases have led to limited bed capacity, staff sickness and difficulties discharging patients. Ms Morgan said health boards have been forced to focus on what will "cause the least harm" by delaying planned treatments. "I know that's a difficult message for people who are in pain and agony," she added. Figuring out … [Read more...] about Covid: NHS Wales planned care will slow down – health minister

Dr. Jha urges Congress to fund ‘new generation’ of COVID vaccines for possible fall surge

May 22, 2022 by abcnews.go.com

The Biden administration is planning for a likely wave of COVID-19 infections this fall and winter by ensuring both a “new generation” of vaccines and access to treatment and testing, White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha said on Sunday — but he stressed that plan depended on congressional funding. “And we have the resources," Jha told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz. "One of the reasons I've been talking a lot about the need for Congress to step up and fund this effort is if they don't, Martha, we will go into the fall and winter without that next generation of vaccines, without treatments and diagnostics. That's going to make it much, much harder for us to take care of and protect Americans."
