A disqualified driver from Derby was found hiding in a bed two months after leading police on a high-speed chase through residential streets in Normanton. At one point during the daytime pursuit, Tomasz Sulima was driving so fast the unmarked police car that was behind lost sight of his BMW. But the car, which belonged to the Alvaston defendant’s uncle, was found abandoned in Village Street. Despite searches for Sulima, officers could not locate him for more than eight weeks, but were tipped off he was at a particular address. When they arrived they found the 22-year-old trying to hide in a bed. A driver and passengers fled after a car crashed into a tree and ended up on its side in a driveway. Police were called to the scene at 11.25pm on Saturday after three occupants of a purple Mazda escaped from the car and ran off down the street following the incident in Wicklow Drive. The crash caused damage to two driveways and a wall. A family of seven, including three children were taking a short walk home after visiting family when they heard the car speeding up behind them. "We were on the opposite side of the road and heard the loud car when all of a sudden it knocked down a tree and then went into someone's driveway and car," said one the witnesses. People who heard the crash came out of their houses to help, to find that the driver and two passengers who appeared unhurt, were fleeing the scene. "My husband tried to run after one of the young boys but he managed to escape," she added. "If it had been a minute earlier, it would have been us getting hit," she added. In 1961 the London Metropolitan Police commissioned two Daimler SP250 ‘Dart’ traffic patrol cars – “the first sports models to be used by the Yard”, in the words of this newspaper. There were to be eventually 26 Met Police Daimlers and one of their roles was to “encourage courtesy on the roads”. In the early 1960s, the mere sight of a black SP250 was more than sufficient to quell an errant Hillman Minx driver and “ton-up” biker dashing around the North Circular Road near the notorious Ace Café. The Daimler is still probably best remembered as a police car, and two surviving examples are 668 ELL, owned by Vincent Worrall, and Jonathan Smith’s 550 CLU, which is the oldest Met Police SP250 in existence.
