How Man Utd could line up this season with Mauro Arnautovic, Milinkovic-Savic and Rabiot as fans slam shock transfers
MANCHESTER UNITED have been enduring a miserable summer transfer window... and fans fear things are about to get a whole lot worse. A disastrous start in the Premier League was hardly a shock after the club's struggles to rebuild following last season's debacle. The Red Devils' campaign kicked off on a poor note as they lost 2-1 to Brighton at Old Trafford to a chorus of boos from disgruntled supporters. The Manchester giants had raised hopes after hiring the highly-talented Erik ten Hag following a turbulent stint under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick (not to mention Jose, LVG and David Moyes). A number of high-profile players who could turn the tide were linked with United after the Dutchman's arrival. The likes of Frenkie de Jong, Cody Gakpo, Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez were all approached but nothing came of it. Women are active behind the lines in Syria’s civil war
This article first appeared on the Atlantic Council site . Women in the city of Deir Ezzor have supported the Syrian revolution in various ways since its beginning. During the early stages of the revolution, women held active roles, including those that were viewed as exclusively male-dominated, such as carrying weapons in the armed opposition. Despite the seizure of most of the province by the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), women in Deir Ezzor remain actively supportive of the local population and are working to protect other women. In March 2011, the first demonstrations calling for the Syrian regime's ouster took place in Deir Ezzor. Women started to join the protests alongside men early on. By the summer, women had a significant presence in the protests. In August 2011, the Bashar al-Assad regime's army invaded Deir Ezzor. The regime—by working with paramilitary groups (the shabiha ), arresting civilians and increasing the number checkpoints—managed to … [Read more...] about Women are active behind the lines in Syria’s civil war

Time for Queenstown to call on its invisible army
ALDEN WILLIAMS/STUFF Tourism in Wānaka was hit hard by Covid-19, as former Lake Wanaka Tourism general manager James Helmore explained in March. (Video first published March 2020). Mike “MOD” O’Donnell is a professional director, writer and strategy adviser. OPINION: I was lucky enough to spend last week down in the Cardrona Valley, midway between Queenstown and Wanaka. There’s a harsh beauty, drawn by a gentle hand that’s the signature of this region. It’s truly a privilege to walk around the tops with my English pointer Cactus in search of quail and the odd red deer. As you approach the snow line, there’s an edgy quality to the air, something that throws your larger life into sharp relief as you clomp your way over tussocks and try to avoid matagouri. Norway threatens to ration electricity in fresh blow for UK and European energy supplies
N orway has drawn up plans to ration electricity exports in a move that has heightened fears of energy shortages in the UK and Europe this winter. The government in Oslo on Monday announced new rules limiting the sale of power to foreign countries as heatwaves threaten Norway’s hydroelectric power generation. Experts said the restrictions threatened the UK’s plan to draw power from Norway this winter via the North Sea Link - leaving electricity supplies more stretched and risking even higher bills for consumers. The National Grid has already revealed that the UK is set to be more dependent than ever on the Continent for power, with interconnectors expected to provide up to 5.7 gigawatts of electricity at peak times. About one quarter of that total – or 1.4 gigawatts – is set to come from Norway. Kathryn Porter, an energy consultant at Watt-Logic, said the proposed restrictions “put at risk the ability of Britain to import from Norway this winter”. “National Grid ESO needs to … [Read more...] about Norway threatens to ration electricity in fresh blow for UK and European energy supplies
The ‘traumatic experience’ of US monkeypox patients
By Sam Cabral Published 22 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The US declared monkeypox a public health emergency late last week. It follows weeks of concern that more needs to be done to contain the virus. On a private daily Zoom call, adult gay men who have contracted monkeypox compare notes. They share their frustrations over trying to get tested or treated but being turned away by healthcare professionals. They throw around tips on how to manage pain that gets worse with each new blister on your body and leaves you unable to do anything. And, to keep from going stir-crazy as they wait for the lesions to heal, they bond over a shared experience none of them asked for. The first US monkeypox case this year was detected on 18 May in the state of Massachusetts. Since then, more than 10,000 cases have been reported across the country, in every … [Read more...] about The ‘traumatic experience’ of US monkeypox patients
Amazon is leading the fight against resurgent militant unions
The trains will be on strike again this week. Later this month, the Post Office workers will walk out. Up in Scotland, public sector workers are planning a series of one-day actions, while wildcat stoppages are hitting everything from chemical factories to warehouses to distribution centres. Along with the energy shortages, the drought, soaring inflation, and potentially energy rationing, we now have militant unions taking us right back to the chaos of the 1970s as well. At some point, businesses will have to lead a fightback against that. Like who? Step forward Amazon, now the UK’s 10th largest private employer. In the United States, it has already developed a range of techniques for taking the fight back to the unions, including hiring consultants and social media campaigners to argue against labour organisers. Without walkouts at its UK distribution centres, it surely can't be long before it starts campaigning against the British unions as well. Sure, we can all … [Read more...] about Amazon is leading the fight against resurgent militant unions
