THERE'S nothing quite like a urinary tract infection to cause you misery. But if you thought you had to fork out a fortune on cranberry juice to protect yourself against things like cystitis, then think again. Protecting yourself from one, however, couldn't be more simple. An updated study claims that all you have to do is drink an extra six glasses of water a day to ward off agonising infections. It found that women who get frequent infections like cystitis could cut their risk in half if they managed to drink an extra 1.5 litres of water a day, compared to women who don't increase their consumption. Doctors have long recommended women at risk from UTIs drink more water but this study has found just how much is enough to make a difference. Flint native Jada Coleman decided to step up when she watched a Netflix documentary about her own city and felt it only told just part of the story. It talked about the crime and poverty, the scandalous water crisis, and the way the city police force was responding. But it said little about its people, how they were suffering, and even less about the way residents were working to help each other when confronted by official deceit and failure. She had to do something. It started with the 24-year-old graphic design student designing and selling T-shirts, with the intention of raising both awareness and funds. Less than three months later, her activist group 810H2O – 810 is the phone code for east Michigan – is helping organise the city’s young people, and her T-shirts are being snapped up by people across the country. Even now, the vast majority of people in the city say they will only drink bottled water (Andrew Buncombe) Four years after the Michigan … [Read more...] about Four years on, the people of Flint are still fighting for that most basic necessity – clean drinking water

When the news agency's reporter asked to speak to a public affairs person, the security guards grabbed the reporter by the shoulders and shoved her forcibly out of the building, she reported. Others shut out included CNN, the environmental-focused news organisation E&E, and MLive, a Michigan-based news outlet. Mr Wilcox told The Independent that “this was simply an issue of the room reaching capacity, which reporters were aware of prior to the event. We were able to accommodate 10 reporters, provided a livestream for those we could not accommodate, and were … [Read more...] about Journalists banned from entering EPA meeting on contaminated drinking water
