Christopher Buskirk 19 September 2018 8:44 AM 19 September 2018 8:44 AM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp President Trump has stated on numerous occasions that he wants to increase trade. Under his wise rule, he assures us, American trade will thrive. It will be Yuge! Why would anyone doubt that desire? He’s a businessman and businessmen want to do more business not less. In pursuit of this, Trump has also said that that he favours a low or no tariff world, but that it must be based on reciprocity – an easily understandable form of fairness but one which has earned Trump scorn from right, left, and centre. The subject came up at a dinner I attended recently. It was mostly populated by right of centre journalists and intellectuals, but there were a few people from the business world there too. When the topic turned to Trump’s trade policy, several of the card-carrying representatives of the local chapter of Conservatism, … [Read more...] about Donald Trump is a free trade hero
How donald trump is rich
opinion Gary Varvel Indianapolis Star Published 3:16 p.m. UTC Jul 11, 2018 Over the years, my caricatures of Donald Trump have evolved but not as much as my opinion of him. When Trump announced he was running for president, I admit that I didn't take this millionaire, hotel magnate, reality TV show celebrity as a serious candidate. I doubted his ability to do the job. So I drew him as a clown. In fact, my cartoons were as critical of him as many of my liberal cartoonist friends. Then Trump started a war with the news media, tagging major news outlets as “fake news.” Ahem, I'm in the media. And while Trump promised to pursue conservatives policies, this conservative cartoonist doubted his sincerity. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that he was on the left. In the crowded primary field, Trump got the most attention by being the loudest. His tweets could not be ignored by the media and resulted in Trump … [Read more...] about Donald Trump is the president I didn’t want, but now I know we need
The worst thing that could possibly happen is underway in America: Donald Trump is keeping his promises. From the recently upheld Muslim travel ban and policing the border with a fascistic zeal to blowing up international diplomacy and pruning America’s already thin social safety net, the oldest and least-experienced man to ever be elected president is enacting the craven far-right agenda on which he campaigned. One of Trump’s most popular and potentially productive campaign promises was his pledge to renegotiate trade deals, and he’s delivering on this promise, too — though not in any actually useful or productive way. America has given much away in international trade over the last two decades, and figures on the left agree that some renegotiation has been overdue, but Trump doesn’t so much negotiate as drop bombs. The former real estate tycoon has ignited growing trade wars with allies and rivals alike, and it was reported this week … [Read more...] about ‘Donald Trump is finally delivering on his WTO threats. Here’s why that’s bad for Brexit’
opinion Alan Draper Opinion contributor Published 9:00 p.m. UTC Jun 3, 2018 The challenge that President Trump poses to critics is to maintain a sense of balance and dignity amidst the turbulence his unpredictability and impulsiveness creates. His compulsive lying breeds hyperbole in return from critics. His paranoia begets paranoia. His drama causes his critics to hyperventilate. It is hard to retain a sense of proportion and lucidity amidst his lack of them. But failure to approach the current situation with sobriety in the face of his constant provocations is necessary in order to distinguish genuine political challenges from fake ones. For example, in reaction to Trump’s claims that elections are rigged, the left has developed its own version of this charge, citing restrictive voter identification laws that target poor and minority voters, and partisan gerrymandering that maximizes the efficiency of Republican votes. In fact, on balance, across the … [Read more...] about Dear liberals, have more faith in your legacy. Donald Trump is not the apocalypse.
AT any other time, I would support missile strikes against a vile regime using illegal chemical weapons to slaughter helpless men, women and children. I just feel uneasy when real weapons are being fired and Donald Trump is calling the shots. This is the centenary of World War One, when chlorine gas turned to hydrochloric acid in the lungs of soldiers like my grandfather on the Somme. We should not turn a blind eye. PM Theresa May insists the use of chemical weapons is intolerable wherever it is used. “We cannot allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised — either within Syria, on the streets of the UK or elsewhere,” she said. Nor would it be right for us to seek international condemnation of Russia for its nerve agent attack on UK soil then sit it out while America and France punished WMD carnage in Syria. The allies successfully inflicted a precision surgical strike. So my worry is not whether it was the right response. It is about the erratic and … [Read more...] about Petulant man-baby Donald Trump’s foreign policy fails on the world stage
