Brazil COVID variant: Where in the UK was it found, is it more deadly and do vaccines work against it?

· February 28, 2021 ·

Surge testing will take place from Monday after cases of the Brazil COVID-19 "variant of concern" were found in England and Scotland. The variant is the latest to be detected in the UK as the government hopes to reduce transmission through lockdown measures and the vaccine roll-out. Sky News takes a look at where the new variant was found, whether it is more transmissible than other strains, and if vaccines will work to stop infection. What is the Brazil 'variant of concern'? The variant, called P1, is a branch of the B.1.1.28 lineage that was first detected in Japanese travellers who had visited Brazil, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said. Advertisement It has three mutations in its spike protein receptor binding domain. It was designated "of concern" as it shares some important mutations with the variant first identified in South Africa. The coronavirus jab’s most tantalising side effects? It may help fight cancer, chronic pain… and even Alzheimer’s

· February 27, 2021 ·

Joan Wakefield has barely been able to walk for the best part of six months. The 72-year-old from Stockport had a knee replacement in October and has since suffered infections in the scar tissue, causing agonising pain. Then at the beginning of this month she received the first dose of AstraZeneca 's Covid-19 vaccine. 'I woke up the next morning and the leg pain and stiffness was gone,' she says. 'I couldn't believe it. I joked with my partner about whether the vaccine had anything to do with it. Previously, I couldn't even bend my leg. Now I can extend it fully, and even put my shoes and socks on. I'm optimistic I'll be able to return to work sooner, rather than later, now.' It seems ludicrous – a vaccine designed to protect against one virus can, somehow, improve other totally unrelated elements of health. But Joan Wakefield is far from alone. A man receives his Covid-19 vaccinations at Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire earlier this week RELATED … [Read more...] about The coronavirus jab’s most tantalising side effects? Young couple’s devastating infertility journey after being told having baby is impossible

· February 28, 2021 ·

Miranda Burns had been dating Tristan Hall for just six months when they were told in December 2019 that it would be "medically impossible" for them to get pregnant naturally. Not a topic that couples in the early stages of a relationship usually have to confront and think about - and certainly something that would have been make-or-break for the pair. Miranda was 25-years-old at the time, while Tristan was only 22. The devastating diagnosis came after Miranda learned she had endometriosis and discovered that the condition had caused damage to her fallopian tubes. To make matters more complex, they then found out that Tristan has issues with his sperm’s morphology, which means they were a concerning shape. The couple, not yet 30, have since got engaged and are starting IVF and will be documenting the whole process in a new podcast called Test Tube Baby. The brutally honest but charmingly funny podcast launches on Monday, March 1 and will detail the highs and lows of … [Read more...] about Young couple’s devastating infertility journey after being told having baby is impossible

CHILDREN will be tested with lateral flow tests twice a week - with 32 million test kits being sent out.
