The UK should prepare for a "difficult autumn" due to the threat of new coronavirus variants emerging and a potential surge in other respiratory viruses, a senior health official has warned. Dr Susan Hopkins, Public Health England's strategic response director for COVID-19 , said the population may have less immunity to respiratory viruses such as flu due to the coronavirus pandemic. She told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that it was "highly unlikely" that a new COVID variant would derail the plan to start easing England's lockdown "for the next three to five weeks". Live COVID-19 updates from the UK and around the world But Dr Hopkins added: "We'll need to monitor carefully as new strains come into the country from around the world. Cancer patient begs those with symptoms to not delay in seeing their GP despite ongoing Covid pandemic
PEOPLE with troubling and unusual symptoms shouldn't delay in seeing their GP despite the Covid-19 pandemic, a cancer patient has warned. Breast cancer patient Alison Tait said early diagnoses could "save your life". Coronavirus restrictions have meant that Brits have been advised to "stay at home to protect the NHS" but this has meant that many people have been left feeling anxious about visiting their GP. Mum Alison Tait was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 and was told it had spread to her liver. The lockdowns have been distressing for many people, but for Alison they have meant she had to attend her appointments alone. Despite this she is still urging others to come forward if they have any signs or symptoms of cancer. Speaking to The Sun, Alison said: "I can understand why people might be wary of going to their GP at the moment, but it’s so important to do so. "The sooner cancer is diagnosed the better the chance of successful treatment, so it … [Read more...] about Cancer patient begs those with symptoms to not delay in seeing their GP despite ongoing Covid pandemic
‘I tried to take my life after Dunblane horror – but now I have my happy family’
It was an ordinary Wednesday morning when I woke up on 13 March, 1996. It was snowing and I shivered as I pulled on my red school uniform sweater. We’d moved to Scotland three years earlier – my mum, my stepdad and my 11-year-old brother Joe. I loved my school. I was a happy-go-lucky kid and very settled. Dunblane was a safe, close-knit community. Neighbours were friendly and Joe and I had the freedom to play in the park and walk to school by ourselves. After we’d waved Mum goodbye at home, we walked the short distance to school and Joe went off to his class, which was in a prefab structure on the site, and I went to mine, Primary Four, which was a classroom in the main building. The school had a large gym in the middle and a big field at the back. It was coming up to 9.30am and our class was walking through a corridor to the music room, called the “GP room”, to practise singing for a big assembly later that week. But something wasn’t right. I was standing next to my … [Read more...] about ‘I tried to take my life after Dunblane horror – but now I have my happy family’

A savvy mum has revealed that she uses a little-known website to save a fortune when ordering her weekly food shop online. Holly Smith is the author of Holly Smith's Money Saving Book and also regularly shares advice on social media of the best places to bag a bargain. In a video posted on YouTube, Holly revealed how she picked up a huge haul of food with a "massive saving" for just £28.34 including delivery - saying if she had headed to the supermarket websites instead she would have paid out £79.50. She said she did it by ordering through a website called Cut Price Barry's , explaining that although you won't be able to pick up your weekly shop in full, it's perfect to subsidise it with items like tins, packets and jars, while heading elsewhere for fresh food. Three-quarters say NHS has dealt with Covid better than private firms in damning poll
Three-quarters of Brits say the NHS has been more effective than private firms in responding to Covid in a damning poll. The survey found 75% thought the NHS and local public health teams had been "more effective at handling the response to the pandemic". Just 9% chose private firms - such as those running Test and Trace contact-tracing - and the remaining 16% said they didn't know. The online poll of 1,002 UK adults for anti-privatisation group We Own It was carried out by Survation on February 23-25 - days before ministers proposed a "derisory" 1% pay rise for NHS staff. We Own It campaigns officer Pascale Robinson said: “This poll shows what campaigners and the public health community have been saying throughout this pandemic. "The response to Covid is best managed by people who know what they’re doing and have decades of experience working in public health, not by outsourcing companies and management consultants. "It's time to give our NHS services and staff the … [Read more...] about Three-quarters say NHS has dealt with Covid better than private firms in damning poll
