Boarding schools no longer need ‘Harry Potter effect’ to inspire children, leading headmaster says
Just over a decade ago, the “Harry Potter” effect was credited for sparking something of a renaissance for British boarding schools, which had seen a steady decline in numbers over the previous twenty years. Several of the country's leading institutions set about building new boarding houses to cope with the surge in demand from a generation of children - and parents - who wanted to re-create the enchantment of boarding schools conjured by J. K. Rowling’s novels. But now the chair of the Boarding School Association (BSA) has said that the Hogwarts-inspired wave of popularity is waning, and institutions must think about ways to modernise their image to attract new students. Leo Winkley, headmaster of St Peter’s School in York, one of the oldest boarding schools in the country, said that the “Harry Potter effect created something of a boarding school revival but it cast a false spell”, adding that schools need not seek to “bamboozle” children or their parents into boarding. … [Read more...] about Boarding schools no longer need ‘Harry Potter effect’ to inspire children, leading headmaster says
Mercedes get their wish as FIA steps in to reduce porpoising after Lewis Hamilton agony
The FIA will step in to reduce the porpoising affecting Formula 1 cars this season "in the interests of safety", the sport's governing body has announced. Many teams across the grid have struggled with the problem this season, with a new aerodynamic design of the cars having an unfortunate side effect. The bouncing of the cars has not only affected the performance of some cars, but it has caused discomfort for drivers. Several have now come out to suggest changes need to be made to car designs in the interest of safety. That follows a particularly bumpy Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton the most affected as his bouncing Mercedes left him with severe back pain. His team-mate George Russell has also been particularly vocal about this issue, having suffered a lot of porpoising in his own car over the Baku weekend. They have been supported by the likes of Ferrari 's Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren in calling for the drivers' safety and … [Read more...] about Mercedes get their wish as FIA steps in to reduce porpoising after Lewis Hamilton agony

Archie Battersbee’s family vow to call for change following 12-year-old’s death
The family of Archie Battersbee have called for a review to be held following the young boy's death, saying they want "something good to come out of this tragedy". The 12-year-old, who had been in a coma since April, died in the Royal London Hospital on Saturday after weeks of legal wrangling resulted in his life-sustaining treatment being stopped. He was being kept alive by a combination of medical interventions, including ventilation and drug treatments. Doctors treating Archie for the last four months declared him as "brain-stem dead" but his family had argued for his life support treatment to continue in the hope he would eventually recover. His parents had made bids to the High Court, Court of Appeal and European Court of Human Rights to have him transferred to a hospice to die, but these were all rejected. Now, Archie's family have vowed to call for "change" to ensure nobody else goes through such a "horrendous experience". "We want something good to come out … [Read more...] about Archie Battersbee’s family vow to call for change following 12-year-old’s death
What Immigration Attorneys Are Telling Their Clients Now: ‘Brace Yourselves’
Immigration lawyers are dealing with a lot right now: large caseloads, court challenges, regulations in dispute. One of the most significant things in flux is the Flores settlement agreement, the 1997 consent decree that has governed the conditions under which migrant children can be detained. Among other things, a 2015 interpretation of that agreement calls on the government to release children into family custody or a licensed program after 20 days. On August 21, the Trump administration announced a rule change to Flores that would lift the 20-day cap and expand family detention. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have challenged the change in court, and it must still be reviewed by U.S. District Judge Dolly M. Gee, in California, before it goes into effect. For lawyers working with detained migrants, the result is profound uncertainty. One of those lawyers is Hardy Vieux, who leads the legal work of Human Rights First, an advocacy group that provides legal … [Read more...] about What Immigration Attorneys Are Telling Their Clients Now: ‘Brace Yourselves’
