Every month a number of organisations publish house price indices, each based on a different set of data. Sometimes the findings agree, sometimes they conflict. When we report on these figures we explain what they are showing, but we thought it would be useful to give a comprehensive guide to the main indices. Whether you are buying or selling a property, working in the property industry, or just interested in the ups and downs of the housing market, it helps to know exactly who is producing each index, what data they use, and what the headline figures actually reflect. Over on the house prices blog you can tell us what you think about the different indices. Time is running out if you haven’t taken advantage of the government’s offer of free money towards buying your first home. That’s because the help-to-buy Isa – with which the government will give you up to £3,000 with only some strings attached – closes to new savers on 30 November. Provided you are in before that date, you can continue tucking money away for another 10 years. So if you, or your offspring, are over 16 and have never owned a home but may well want to in the future, you might want to reserve your spot by signing up now. You can open an account with as little as £1, and don’t have to pay in every month, so some might say it’s a no-brainer to grab one now before they are withdrawn from sale. However, to slightly confuse matters, there is another account that also offers a government cash bonus for savers: the lifetime Isa. So should you get that instead – or take out both? Here we run through what you need to know. … [Read more...] about Help-to-buy Isa: last chance to get up to £3,000 of free government cash
Residents in million-pound houses in a development built by Kevin McCloud's troubled housing firm have complained that two years after it was due to be finished the site is still covered in scaffolding, with unfinished pavements and no street lighting. HAB Housing, founded by McCloud, promised eco-friendly developments in Winchester and Oxford would be finished by 2017. But yesterday the Winchester location still has a building site with temporary toilets where the development promised a wildflower meadow and children's play area. One woman complained she was informed just last week her bathroom floor would have to be ripped up and leaky pipes relaid. Another said the plumbing was so bad her toilet backed up and overflowed on Christmas Day. Residents in HAB's Kings Worthy development on the outskirts of Winchester said scaffolding still covered houses as the builders ripped off wooden cladding The plans promised a children's play area and wildflower meadow would … [Read more...] about Not very Grand Designs! Like many couples, Edward and Hazel Short longed to swap the urban rat-race for an idyllic life by the sea, where they would spend their days breathing in salty air as they watched their young children grow up. The new home they hankered after, however, was more elaborate than most would dare to dream of. After leaving London in 2004, they borrowed £1.8 million to build a staggering modernist ‘lighthouse’ at Down End Point, a renowned beauty spot in North Devon. The six-bedroom house was to be rendered white to catch the light bouncing off the ocean, its four-storey cylindrical tower featuring a dining room with 9ft-high windows, master bedroom and observatory. In the main body of the house, to its side, would be a kitchen with uninterrupted sea views, a guest wing, sauna and cinema; in front, a 60ft glass-edged infinity pool with panoramic views across Croyde Bay. Edward and Hazel Short (pictured) borrowed £1.8million to build a modernist 'lighthouse' at Down … [Read more...] about From Grand Design to £3 million house of HORROR: Edward Short was so proud of his dream home project he invited in TV cameras, only for it to end in a building that looks like a North Korean missile bunker
