Sweltering Britain is soaring towards what could be the hottest day ever, as trains are delayed to prevent tracks from buckling in the heat and reservoirs run dry. The Met Office said Friday could be the UK's warmest July day as temperatures are expected to rise to at least 37C (98.6F), with the possibility the all-time heat record of 38.5C (101.3F) will be broken. BRITAIN is set to swelter in 35C next week as searing temperatures return and bookies slash odds on the UK's hottest day ever. As one heatwave ended last week, another is raring to sweep in to keep Brits toasty - just as the summer holidays kick off. With Met Office experts confidently predicting 35C heat bookies have slashed the odds on Brits enjoying the hottest ever day to just 2/1. The record currently stands at 38.5C - taken in 2003 at Brogdale, near Faversham, Kent. Public Health England issued a warning for Brits to make sure they protect themselves from harmful UV rays, as temperatures creep ever higher. Glasgow has recorded its hottest day since records began as another sweltering day saw the temperature peak at 31.9C. The city beat Wednesday's high of 31.3C in Aviemore in the Highlands, and came close to matching the hottest June day ever recorded in Scotland - 32.2C at Ochtertyre in Perth and Kinross in 1893. At 31C , Strathallan in Perthshire enjoyed the second highest temperature on Thursday, followed by Tyndrum which saw the mercury hit 30.7C. The Met Office said Thursday saw Glasgow beat a previous high of 31.1C recorded in 1950. Forecaster Sophie Yeomans said: "It's the warmest day of the year in Scotland again today, but we haven't quite beaten the June record. "Around the coastline it will have been a little fresher, with Aberdeen recording a high of 23.7C." Liverpool could be set for its hottest day EVER recorded this week - as the mercury continues to rise. Temperatures in the city so far have climbed to a record-breaking 30C but forecasters say it could get even hotter. Tuesday was confirmed as the hottest day in Liverpool for the past decade but, as the countrywide heatwave continues into the weekend, we could see the hottest day ever. Today was another scorcher, with clear skies and highs of 28C - with the weather on Thursday and Friday set to stay just as hot. We will see another day of unbroken sunshine on Thursday, allowing it to turn hot again. Some gentle sea breezes will develop around coasts, making it feel more comfortable here, but the maximum temperature could reach as high as 30C again.
