Hospitals bring back mandatory face masks as number of Covid patients soars to highest figure since April
Hospitals are set to bring back the wearing of face coverings and reinstate social distancing measures in a bid to curb a recent surge in Covid cases. Trusts from Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, Devon and Wales have all reinstated guidance that urges people to mask-up because of a spike in infections. Figures from NHS England show there were around 10,658 patients hospitalised with the virus on Monday. Infections have doubled in a fortnight across England — with around 1,000 patients now being admitted with the virus each day. There are fears that a new sweep of the latest Covid variant could decimate NHS staff levels once more, causing knock-on effects for ambulance wait times and the availability of specialists and operations. Data from the Office for National Statistics showed 2.3million people had coronavirus in the week ending June 24, a 32 per cent rise from the previous week. Experts believe the latest flare-up in cases are likely linked to the BA.4 and … [Read more...] about Hospitals bring back mandatory face masks as number of Covid patients soars to highest figure since April

‘The health system is always going to be constrained,’ DHB boss says
Chris Fleming says it was stories about patient harm that kept him up at night during his time as Southern District Health Board chief executive. He stands by his decision to downgrade the Lumsden Maternity Centre. Fleming says there will always be a need for charity hospitals in New Zealand because the healthcare system is rationed. Southern District Health Board chief executive Chris Fleming’s resignation coincided with the disestablishment of district health boards, and he says Southlanders must speak up to make sure their needs are met in the future. Louisa Steyl reports. Southland’s former health boss wishes he could have solved the region’s GP crisis and nursing shortage before leaving his post. The return of ‘Angry Andy’, the Health Minister who is denying the obvious
JASON DORDAY/STUFF Health Minister Andrew Little and Associate Health Minister (Māori Health) Peeni Henare have formally launched two new health entities at AUT in Manukau, south Auckland. Ian Powell is a former executive director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS). OPINION: When he was elected leader of the Labour Party following the 2014 election defeat, the National Party in government detected something in Andrew Little’s personality, leading him to be nicknamed “ Angry Andy ”. At the time I thought this was a bit off and, at best, of limited alliterative appeal. But if “Angry Andy” was a bit off then, it is certainly applicable today as Little, now Health Minister, continues to deny the obvious: that there is a crisis in the health system. Michael Sheen: I broke down hearing kids’ care stories
By Michael Sheen Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing How would you feel if your child, or one you knew, was taken into care and ended up living in a B&B, a hostel, or even slept rough? What I'm talking about here is "the care system", the safety net we'd rely on if we couldn't look after our kids. I've been working on a BBC documentary which has found teenagers are still being placed in B&Bs and hostels - six years after the Welsh government said it wanted to "eliminate" it . Some of the stories have shocked me. With record numbers of children being taken into care in Wales and England, I've spoken to some young people who have been through the care system in an hour-long documentary, filmed over nearly three years, I've helped make for the BBC. ‘Abuse, assault, profit’ - childcare staff speak out Huge profits made from … [Read more...] about Michael Sheen: I broke down hearing kids’ care stories
