If you had to leave your home and all your worldly belongings in an instant to run for your life, as thousands of Ukrainians have, what would you grab? Money, your passport, some spare clothes? For many Ukrainian families, the one thing they could not leave behind was their pets. Pictures have emerged of refugees carrying cats, dogs and birds as they rush to safety . But those animals that were abandoned roam the streets in search of food and love. One of these much-loved pets found me, while I was reporting in Ukraine, and I could not leave that dog behind. The city of Buffalo is trying to return to normal following last week's mass shooting at a Tops Supermarket that killed 10 Black people. There to help the city heal is Chef Darian Bryan. He opened up a pop-up restaurant in the area, with funds going towards helping the families of the victims. "These folks are hurting so I'm like you know what, food is love and food is what brings people together, and I'm so grateful that I can put a smile on these folks' faces," he told CBS News. Bryan is originally from Jamaica, but is a staple to Buffalo. He has hosted several Jamaican pop-up events and has cooked for the Buffalo Bills. He also owns the catering business called "The Plating Society." On Wednesday, several Buffalo Bills players served thousands of meals , some prepared by Bryan, at the site of the shooting. The World Health Organization (WHO) says the death toll has been vastly undercounted in much of the world, but poor data collection in most African countries makes it difficult to assess the true impact on the continent. Evidence on COVID -related deaths in South Africa suggests there are serious grounds for concern. Experts at South Africa’s Medical Research Council believe hundreds of thousands of deaths have been lost in the paperwork. The real death toll is thought to be three times the official number of 101,000. Health officials are also grappling with worryingly low rates of vaccination in many African countries. As a whole, only 17% of Africans have been fully vaccinated against COVID, a rate that lags far behind other parts of the world - like Europe (65.7%), Asia (69%), and South America (74.5%). The international trade secretary has said the British government's first focus is to maintain peace in Northern Ireland after the US warned a trade deal with the UK is at risk if Westminster changes the protocol.
