A convicted killer who tackled the London Bridge terrorist with a fire extinguisher has compared to extremist to the wannabe jihadis mocked in satirical film Four Lions. John Crilly, an ex-prisoner who subdued Usman Khan during the knife rampage, posted on Facebook after the attack killed Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones, two workers on the rehabiliation scheme he was part of. Crilly wrote that Mr Merritt was 'the best guy I ever met', adding: '(Jack) was killed by a s***house of a pathetic rubber dingy rapids type terrorist.' The quote is a reference to the 2010 film Four Lions, which mocks Islamist recruits who say life is like being in the queue at Alton Towers, waiting to get on the 'rubber dingy rapids' ride. Mr Crilly added: 'Jack actually tried helping this guy! To educate him. As he educated me. 'Jack came all the way from Cambridge to be at my graduation... How proud am I to be called Jack Merritt's friend.' John Crilly (holding his degree certificate) is pictured … [Read more...] about Convicted killer who tackled London Bridge knifeman with a fire extinguisher hits out a ‘s***house Four Lions terrorist’ who murdered his friend and mentor Jack Merritt

Florence + the Machine: High As Hope review – older, wiser, comparatively calmer
Florence Welch recently told a journalist that her fourth album pursues a noticeably different direction. It is, she confirmed, less “Florence-y”. It’s a statement that is hard to read without raising a quizzical eyebrow. Being Florence-y means dealing in a showy kind of musical melodrama, where tribal drums meet sawing orchestras, grandiloquent piano and the singer’s war-cry voice, heavy on the vibrato. It’s an approach that has earned her three platinum albums and a level of fame that’s led Penguin to collect and publish her biro-written poems, lyrics and inspirational notes-to-self in a book. Moreover, we have been here before. Her last album, How Big How Blue How Beautiful, arrived in 2015 after advanced publicity suggested it was going to be less Florence-y, too: the stripped-down work, as she put it then, of “a quiet person”. In reality, it sounded like the work of a person who could drown out a car alarm at 20 paces; an album … [Read more...] about Florence + the Machine: High As Hope review – older, wiser, comparatively calmer
Miami Beach or Essex? This curvy art deco property listed for £950k wouldn’t look out of place on Ocean Drive – but is located much closer to home
It's an ultra-modern house with an art deco exterior that brings a little slice of glitzy Ocean Drive, Miami, to Frinton-on-Sea, Essex. The Grade II listed home, called the Round House, is on the Essex coastline and comes with stunning views of the North Sea, rather than Biscayne Bay. Originally designed by architect Oliver Hill in the early 1930s, the home is part of a unique development and is located by the popular beaches of Frinton, Walton-on-the-Naze, Holland-on-Sea and Clacton. It's not Miami Beach! The Grade II listed house is called The Round House and is in the Essex coastal town of Frinton-on-Sea It has a white exterior with glass block windows and a round shape, which is indicative of the curved walls that are typical of the art deco style found in Miami Beach. The architect is said to have wanted to build a modernist and opulent estate for the middle classes looking for grand homes by the sea, which were close to London. Frinton is roughly 85 miles from London and … [Read more...] about Miami Beach or Essex? Final encore for UK’s live music venues as noise rules lead to closures
For music fans of a certain age it must count as one of the greatest gigs in history. On 4 July 1976, at Sheffield’s Black Swan club, the Clash played live for the first time, supporting the Sex Pistols on a bill that also included the Buzzcocks. Over the years the Black Swan changed its name to the Sheffield Boardwalk, but its commitment to live music remained undiminished. Arctic Monkeys performed at the club, releasing a demo collection recorded at the venue called Beneath the Boardwalk. But the club is no more. It has joined many other famous venues, including Leicester’s Princess Charlotte, Leeds’ Duchess of York and Dudley’s JB’s, in shutting its doors. In central London, large-scale redevelopment projects have seen the closure of Madame Jo Jo’s and the Astoria and the relocation of the 12 Bar Club; Camden has witnessed the closure of the Purple Turtle and the Stillery. Several other Camden venues and Oxford Street’s 100 Club are said to … [Read more...] about Final encore for UK’s live music venues as noise rules lead to closures
Prince Charles ‘plans to turn Buckingham Palace into Madame Tussauds style tourist attraction’
WHEN Prince Charles is king, he is said to be planning some big changes to Buckingham Palace, the Sun can reveal. According to a royal source, the future monarch is hoping to turn the royal residence into a public attraction, and some courtiers have expressed their concerns. PALACE 'TOO COSTLY TO RUN' Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the UK’s sovereigns since 1837 and is also where the Queen’s offices are situated. A royal source said to Fabulous Digital that Prince Charles is said to find Buckingham Palace “too big, too impersonal, and far too costly to run for what is basically a royal admin centre.” They added: “He sees its future as being some sort of open space for the public - open all the time not just for the summer. “Maybe a permanent exhibition of decades of history on the Royal Family.”Currently the palace is only open to the public during the summer months of August and … [Read more...] about Prince Charles ‘plans to turn Buckingham Palace into Madame Tussauds style tourist attraction’
