The War Damage Commission released funds to repair the stadium only in 1948 so for the first three years of post-war football, Manchester United played their home games at Maine Road. They were Division One runners-up in each of their three seasons in Moss Side and won the FA Cup in 1947-48. United hold the record for attracting the highest ever attendance for a league match to Maine Road when 83,260 people watched them take on Arsenal (the eventual title winners) in January 1948.
